During E3 2019, Astro brought out another headset offering and that was a refresh of their high end model. This is the fourth generation A50 Wireless gaming headset and it brings a number of improvements to the design. I was able to get some hands-on time with this headset during a private meeting and that was with the Xbox One version. Full handling and usage during my limited time, got a good idea of what to expect when it does fully release.
I will also mention that I was told their headsets will be forward compatible with the Xbox Scarlett console and that they’re always working towards the future. For now, this is one quality design that looks sleek and is very comfortable.
This entry is optimized for Spatial audio solutions such as Dolby Atmos. This brings a focus on a sense of 3D space that is truly all around you. This is in opposition to 3D placement, the method used back in the day. To focus on the headset, this is one comfy and sleek looking thing. It features a largely black design, with minimal cushion at just the right places. It really was comfy to wear and just handle.
You can tell what the headset is, and honestly it looks really cool. There’s a focus on comfort with this model, and with that comes an optional Mod Kit to go further if you’d like. There is of course extra software available to tweak sounds for the headset, a native app on the Xbox One as well if you didn’t know. If you’re on another platform the software can be found on Windows and IOS as well.
There are three customizable EQ mode presets including Astro for precise bass, Pro for tuned precision and Studio for neutral accuracy. Each of them have a different focus, whether that’s for gaming, streaming or just movies and music. That’s right, the headset is versatile for your life outside of gaming too. The microphone is a 6.0mm uni-directional setup with the headset having 40mm drivers. There’s a battery life of over fifteen hours and there’s a carried weight of 370 grams. The base station has also been given an upgrade for easy dock charging and low latency voice communication. It makes the pairing and charging a simple process.
The Astro A50 wireless + base station for Xbox One/PC and Playstation 4/PC are available for $299.99 USD when they launch. That’s all for Astro A50 2019 Wireless Headset, at least for now we hope. Check out our E3 2019 hub for additional coverage from the event.
