At the Calgary Expo 2024 there was a Cameron Monaghan panel at the BMO Center main stage where he went over his career. It was mostly focused on a Q&A style presentation, with lots of questions and some good answers along the way.
It mostly centered on the crowd’s obsession with ponchos. This being a reference to Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order where his character is really into ponchos. He was asked his favorite poncho from the game which was the pink option according to him. Multiple poncho jokes then followed. Including being asked what poncho attributes he’s into. He went on to talking about how the stitching, how elaborate the design is and also the season are all key points that factor into picking a good poncho. It’s the most versatile part of your equipment Cameron claims.
Aside from being bothered about ponchos for which is was an overly good sport about, he really dove passionately into the tech behind the upcoming Tron: Ares for which he’ll be part of. That tech for each of the previous movies has showcased just what era can do and they continue to push the technical elements of film.
In going over his previous career efforts Gotham came up, talking about what he based the Joker on. Monaghan mentioned spending a lot of time reading as many general Joker comics as possible. While not specifically basing his Joker on previous performances, but trying to find inspiration from other historical villain roles in film. Things such as Silence of the Lambs with Anthony Hopkins or interviews with criminals and sociopaths for further inspiration. Not so much a single performance, but stealing from as many sources as possible.
Much of the rest of the discussion went back to Star Wars Jedi Survivor alongside its original entry as noted prior. Going over the benefit of motion capture being a controlled environment and that he was specifically just involved in cinematics as opposed to regular gameplay mentioning that the talent at EA’s Respawn brought that to life. Specifically for stances and what not highlighting that talented swordsman and acrobatically talented individuals made those possible. The blaster stance is his favorite style however.
When it first came to auditioning for the game he had a feeling it was Star Wars. He doesn’t normally do games but saw it being named untitled EA Project with the script going over dark magic and witches so he assumed it was Star Wars and joined up. When being auditioned they threw him a toy lightsaber to showcase just what he could do. The process was lengthy, with the first game taking up a year of time whereas the second took up two years. He was more involved with the sequel. Bode in the game was played by an actor where they did motion capture together.
Finally, Tina was a diva on set. She would tear up scripts and set them on fire. Truly difficult to work with and didn’t understand play fighting. She got arrested often which blew up the budget on the game severely. As Cameron continued jesting about Tina the lights on the stage went out and he started yelling he was sorry and for mercy because she was ever so powerful. That’s the Night Sisters for yeah, got to watch out for that sort of thing some would say. That about sums everything up, we have additional panel and other coverage from the show in our hub.
