A genre of gaming that’s often overlooked is the epic battles within the medieval era. At least, not to this degree in what I would call Battlefield but with knights. Sixty-four players face off in a series of arenas battling either to the death in team deathmatch setups or within large scale tiered battles. The latter setup really is the heart of this experience. You’ll be battling in massive teams to push objectives forward or to defend them.
It’s a never ending conflict one might say, aside from if the time runs out or the objectives are completed. These are very vast battles and most definitely epic ones to engage in. They’re also quite creative in terms of the setup. You get objectives such as pushing caravans forward, taking out the heir or perhaps even capturing the odd gatehouse. It does go further though, burning places down or stealing gold to name some more.
They really are quite creative with the setup, with something unique in each of the various large scale arenas of conflict. It might not sound like the most complicated of experiences in that regard, but you can play this for countless hours and never get bored of what’s going on. If you’re not into full matches there are smaller lobby size options too. This is very much an online multiplayer game, but it does have offline combat against the bots available as well to play if you’re into that sort of thing.
This is one seriously impressive experience in terms of the visual fidelity and the combative style. It’s very dynamic in how you fight with various classes to choose from. Be an archer, be a knight and then go further by changing up the weapons to use. You’ll unlock more weapons as you level, and you’ll also have various currency you’ve unlocked to change the aesthetic style of your soldiers.
Swap everything from helmets to the style of your outfit, it’s quite in-depth and easy to earn this stuff as well while playing. There are many mechanical type options as you play. Using catapults or say, a massive ballista which are fun. You can pick up rocks to throw which we’ve labeled “rockle” amongst friends or even things such as bread. There’s a Xbox Achievement for so many bread kills which is funny. It’s just got some really quirky weapons to use against others which is entertaining for sure.
Going back to the visuals the game is just gorgeous. It really does shine on Xbox Series X with the 4k resolution at 60fps. There’s HDR support there too, and it just looks fantastic. It’s filled with detail in every area, feeling lively and it’s very gory. Like, you can take off heads and then pick those up to throw at people. It’s wild, and very exciting to be a part of if you want some gruesome combat experiences.
Chivalry 2 is an incredible experience being gruesome and directly comparable to Battlefield but with knights. It’s very exciting to play, and just a blast with a group of friends as well. The combat feels epic, large in scale and is filled with wild moments. It can be funny, charming and very tactical.
The combat really does feel engaging with various ways to swing at foes, and a ton of strategy being layered within the way to take on others. It feels evenly balanced with crossplay and it’s just such a treat to play. It really is just a blast and I hope this continues to get supported with new content as this is a must play experience. There really isn’t much out there like this, and it delivers the whole way through from unique combat to sparkling visuals.
