This is a game I’ve kept a bit of an eye on getting the odd email or two about it. I got note that a preview session was going on and I thought it might be fun to hop in and give it a whirl. This is actually a rather neat experience that is definitely Among Us like but certainly has its own flair to it. This is a 3D experience, where you go about this medieval town completing tasks.
You have various goals to accomplish, all the while trying to figure out which of the people around you is a conspirator. Those folks are the ones trying to kill the innocent villagers that are trying to live their lives. The matches are set to twelve players in a lobby which feels like a good amount. There are many NPCs around as well, making the town feel somewhat lively.
One negative aspect of the experience is that the game doesn’t feature rolling lobbies, forcing you to gather up your friends every single time a match is finished. For this type of game, that’s a real pain. Going back to the innocent folks, some of this side have special abilities. These gifts, which are variant based on their class can help everyone figure out who exactly is going around killing everyone.
The kills themselves are conducted at night since the game features a night period where everyone sleeps. I’ve been told you will be able to customize your house eventually, so that’s cool. There’s also poison that can be used to kill, but in general the conspirators only can get a kill a night. That’s in regards to blade usage, as I mentioned poison is quite a thing as are some potion mixing elements.
There’s also the trapper class which is part of the innocents where apparently your traps can kill friendlies. I woke up one day to discover that my own trap outside my door would kill me, with another friendly shortly after walking across a bridge and getting killed by one. They should really make a note about that, as you wouldn’t expect it.
In general this was quite polished though in terms of providing a fairly large play space and having matches that flowed fine. There were a decent selection of little quests to do, and the executions were fun. See, as the town folks you can choose to burn alive someone you think is a conspirator which is ever so gruesome and somewhat funny at the same time.
These town meetings were always entertaining. It’s definitely got some neat aspects to it. It makes murder a delightful time and it seems like the foundations are here for a solid experience. The team wasn’t sure if they were going the early access route, so that may happen and they’re doing an open beta to see the response of the community.
I also asked about Eville on consoles and they said they don’t have plans currently which is disappointing as I’d love to see this on console. It was a lot of fun to play, a whimsically delightful time and something I’d suggest taking a look into if you like the whole Among Us type of concept but want something a tad different. There’s a lot of potential here, so it’ll be interesting to see how this one goes.
