Head off into the adventure of a life time, or well sort of find your path. Your chosen character is someone having just finished high school without much direction in life. A path is then suddenly chosen as aliens invade Earth since apparently humans are something of a special drug to them. You become a bounty hunter and aim to eliminate these enemies. It’s a fairly straight forward scenario, and a comedy.

Your guns, they talk to you while blasting foes and are your guidance within this experience. From the co-creator of Rick & Morty you have Justin Roiland being the main force behind the hilarity at play. I’d say a decent amount of the jokes did decently well with me, some will find it even more funny but your mileage will vary based on your humoring style.

It’s certainly mature, so keep that in mind as some of the comments are just really out there. Anyways, it’s got an enjoyable narrative where you blast a variety of enemies across a few planets and try to keep it together. There are some darker tones and a little bit of heart too.

You’ve got a sister that you’re introduced to while she’s doing coke and then she feeds into what’s going on as well a bit. Like I said, it’s a bit out there and rather wild. From the more important bounties you hunt to the smaller side bits that can be found when you explore.

Gameplay

It’s your fairly standard shooter but with a variety of guns that talk to you. You can upgrade them with the bounty currency or hidden loot sacks you break. The game in general has a sense of progression where you get cooler tools such as a jetpack or say booster options. You also have fun suit abilities, like detective mode!

These trials for suit abilities always come chalk full of ads too which is neat. The levels are quite detailed, but I did find that later on you kept revisiting the same spots. This could have done with some more spaces to visit. You do revisit the locations in differing ways with new abilities but it still felt too familiar after awhile. The guns are fun to use with varying abilities, and they also help you solve light puzzles that are present.

It’s quite linear in design, but offers some freedom at times to explore and use secret teleportation elements to beam in fun bits. When it comes to performance on Xbox Series X we’re getting a 4k resolution at 60fps. I did notice lots of dips but it’s been noted that a day one update should smooth this out that hasn’t been applied as of writing this.

The Conclusion

High on Life is a quirky, straight up bizarre shooter that provides a relaxing and at times comedic experience. There are a range of bounties to gather that are essentially boss battles. It’s got some decently complex characters and a bizarre plot that matches the humor. It was an enjoyable time offering a good amount of variety.

I had fun rolling through it and if the style of comedy matches you well then it’ll be quite a grand time. It’s got some vibrant visuals that feel detailed, though as of writing I did have performance problems though I hope those are smoothed out for. It’s a neat setup, a fun time and it brings some surprises the whole way through. Chat with your guns and blast some enemies as you prepare to embrace the most highest of lives.
