This is a rogue-like shooter set against the backdrop of space. Something you’ve probably heard before genre wise, but this one is a bit different. It’s presented almost like a comic strip, in terms of the story and just the look too. It’s really rad, and this adds to the zany attitude it has going for it. You’re going around blasting things on ships and gathering resources in order to survive.

Not only are you looking for better parts in regards to getting new upgrades, but you also need things such as food or fuel. Prior to boarding any specific ship you see on the star map you’ll need to spend resources to get there. You may find yourself floating around aimlessly if you’ve been neglecting the essential travel items. There’s some fun to this as I’ve mentioned with some silly things you’ll come across.

The ships are varied, you’re never sure what you’ll find within them. There will be different layouts, unique enemies and many different rooms. Once on-board you’ll also need to watch that oxygen meter as things can deteriorate if you’re not paying attention. There’s a goal to what you’re doing, it’s not necessarily just exploration.

Gameplay

I really enjoyed the visuals here, it’s basically right from a comic book. That being said, there’s quite a bit of screen tearing on the Xbox One X which is a bit disappointing for sure. It’s nothing too detrimental to the experience, but still slightly annoying. There’s a fair selection of items to unlock as you continue to play.

Different weapons, and unique new extra options for taking out your foes along the way. With each life you do get some perks, and some things stick around which is nice. You get a decent sense of progression here as you aim to collect scraps in order to produce better tools.

The Conclusion

Void Bastards is a fresh experience, it takes the genre and does something fun with it. I really enjoyed playing this for the most part, I wish the screen tearing was cleaned up however. The shooting works fine, and there are some fun tricks in this.

One of those would be drawing a more powerful enemy into a special area, and then ejecting them out into space. There are many unique rooms, ships and things to explore as you venture across space. Watch out for those supplies, you’ll need them if you’re aiming to go further out there in the solar system.
