The original animated Aladdin is certainly a classic film, and this is the live action take on that. It brings a new genie from Will Smith, and he definitely adds his own style to it. He’s actually a fine addition in this one and delivers on the role.
That aside, this is definitely just a straight up retelling of that original story with a minor expansion here or there. It’s largely the exact same thing, but there are some decent laughs and it works fine. It’s nothing too special, but a solid overall film. They definitely have a neat way of presenting this, as it flows uniquely and isn’t afraid of bright colors splashing everywhere.
While I was worried the villain wouldn’t be as menacing, this one was fine and did bring a more calculated level of villainy. The side kick animals were also fine with their CGI presentations in this one. Generally the world felt believable, and the songs were well done in their integration throughout the runtime.
Aladdin (2019) 4k Blu-Ray comes with a number of special features. These are available to view on the traditional Blu-Ray disc as opposed to the 4k one. They include the following selections that can be viewed as a bundle or individually. "Deleted Scenes”, “Bloopers”, “Deleted Desert Moon Song”, “Behind the Scenes” and more.
This was an alright offering of extras. I found the behind the scenes to perhaps be the most interesting. You get a small glimpse into how things were slowed, or sped up and how the actors would have to adapt to that with their singing. The director’s unique style of shots were the reason this was an issue, and it’s clever how they tweak things for an interesting visuals presentation. I felt the bloopers could have been longer, the deleted scenes were neat for expansion and plentiful.
The Aladdin (2019) 4k Blu-Ray package brings a decent selection of extra special features for this generally solid live action take on a classic animated film. I found Will Smith to generally be a great genie, in a different sort of way while still having enough depth within the role.
The visuals were mostly impressive, and this was an alright take on the story. It certainly had a sense of scale, and was slightly different from the source material though not much. Its fine for the most part, you get some solid extras in this. I found the resolution quality to be great, and the HDR is a nice treat in this film.
