This is a fairly generic spy thriller type action film where a hitman faces off against his younger version. It’s about cloning, secrets and carrying a really generic plot. What does make this particularly interesting is that it was shot in a very particular way, being a neat showcase of modern technology.
I’ll cover that more under the special features however. When it comes to the narrative we follow Henry (Will Smith) as he aims to retire. Danny (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has been sent in to watch, and the two get mixed up in a series of dangerous events as their company aims to take out Henry.
The man is however not alone as he uses a close contact Baron (Benedict Wong) to assist him. This is when a younger, and very dangerous man comes into the frame to take on the main hitman. That being himself of course, quite a situation for sure.
The Gemini Man 4k Blu-Ray comes with a number of special features. These are available to view on the traditional Blu-Ray disc as opposed to the 4k one. That is, except for a single VFX extra on the 4k. The others on the traditional disc include the following selections that can be viewed individually.
"Alternate Opening”, “Deleted Scenes” and additional bonuses that dive into the work behind this. Quite honestly, the VFX extra is a must see as it really showcases the amount of work that went into this film that really is quite a technological feat. In general there’s a solid amount of extra content here and that’s appreciated, just wish it was all on a single disc.
What makes this particular 4k title special aside from the native high resolution is the fact that it’s presented at 60fps. This creates a fluid, and entirely unique way to view the movie. The action scenes feel far more brutal, and everything is so much quicker. It’s so realistic, and I wish more films incorporated this style despite it being far from traditional. In general it’s gorgeous to view, and quite a different sort of experience.
The Gemini Man 4k Blu-Ray package has some great extras, a stunning high FPS and many gorgeous technological inclusions. The narrative is however rather lacking, and this is a very generic movie. It’s not the best use of this tech despite it being deployed beautifully here. It really does feel far more intense when it comes to action scenes, and the regular movement is so much more life-like.
I know this style isn’t for everything, but I truly did appreciate this as it felt quite unique. You also must watch the VFX reel that’s with the 4k disc, seriously fascinating and fairly quick look at the work that went into creating scenes here. So overall a very weak story with different action and technical aspects that do help elevate this to something unique. Other than that, it’s quite forgettable despite having some solid performances and great actors involved.
