Some time has passed since the first film and we're now greeted by an older Sophie (Amanda Seyfried). She's completing a dream project of her now passed mother Donna (Meryl Streep). Things aren't going terribly well for her in regards to the opening event and the narrative is driven with a split presentation. You get a modern sense of what's going on now and then that's filled in with a past look at mostly the same locations, along with the journey her mother took to reach this destination.
This is acted by Lily James, and she really delivers on that younger version of Donna. I was surprised by the setup of the film and it was a mostly solid experience. The music was, for the most part good and the scenes were gorgeous in cinematic presentation. They really went all out and I was surprised by how well everything comes together towards the ending, I wasn't sure they would be able to fit the past into the present in a way that worked so well.
The Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again 4k Blu-Ray comes with a number of special features. These are available to view on the regular 4k disc which was an excellent decision, most packages stick them on the regular Blu-Ray disc. They include the following selections that can be viewed as a bundle or individually. Since there are many of them, just a pile to be honest here are highlights to give an idea of what's available. "Enhanced Sing-Alongs"; "Deleted Scenes", "Mamma Mia! Reunited", "Playing Donna", "Costumes and the Dynamos", "Curtain Call" and "The Story".
There are full extra songs to enjoy, the deleted scenes add a little bit to the narrative and I was pleasantly surprised by how many extras there were. Full cast discussions, a look at many of the key scenes and details on how the film came together. There are extra interviews, commentary selections and full sing-alongs if you'd like to partake in that. I enjoyed the extra features and found the additional context on the setup to be interesting.
The Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again 4k Blu-Ray package is stuffed with extra content including epic sing-along options, deleted scenes and tons of additional features to enjoy. I was truly surprised by how much was available in those extras and fans will certainly be pleased by what's presented here. The general film itself was fine as well with a solid narrative and well developed characters.
The mix of past and present was displayed fine with moments that connected perfectly. The songs were mostly good and being a musical it kept the vibrant happiness up just enough. I did feel that the pacing was off towards the end of the story and some the later songs weren't quite as good. It sort of just hit a wall and then trailed right off which was disappointing. Still, this is a great package and there's a lot to enjoy with this musical that builds upon the backing of ABBA.
