This is definitely a video game themed movie, while it does focus on pop culture in general I do feel that gamers will likely appreciate this film the most. That of course overlooking a single line towards the end of the film that feels out of touch. This movie has a simple, yet dynamic plot and it's exciting to watch. The plot goes as follows, the creator of this magical virtual reality world called the Oasis has died, years have passed and no one has been able to finish his special Easter Egg challenge.
Anyone can win the world he made by collecting three keys and it's a battle to do so since this corporation is aggressively battling for it. There are some creative elements to the journey as one core group attempts to discover the secrets that hide these keys. This is an exploration into what makes games so special, which is certainly appreciated. There was a good amount of respect given to various properties included. You should see basically every iconic property in history at some point whether that's in the front or background of the action. They obviously didn't include everything, but you'll have a hard time noticing what's not there.
The Ready Player One 4k Blu-Ray comes with a number of special features. These are available to view on the traditional Blu-Ray disc as opposed to the 4k one. They include the following selections that can be viewed as a bundle or individually. "Game Change: Cracking the Code"; "Effects for a Brave New World", "Level Up: Sound for the Future", "High Score: Endgame", "Ernie & Tye's Excellent Adventure and "The 80's: You're The Inspiration".
The features cover basically all elements behind the construction and production of this film. You get behind the scenes look at how the script came together, the structuring of the sets and the designs for the effects. There are some neat facts to be found, I particularly enjoyed the look at the sound elements in how they wanted to give every little thing it's own distinct effect.
The Ready Player One 4k Blu-Ray package brings an interesting selection of extra special features and one fun movie that dives into classic pop culture. The extra content helps paint a picture behind the process of how this came to be and should certainly point out some extra easter eggs that are hidden throughout.
This is one film that has only gotten better since I first viewed it being one awesome collection of history. It is littered with little secrets, but that's not even the core of the experience. The main elements of the narrative, the action and the characters come together for exciting results. The CGI was great, it's an enjoyable watch and while it might be gaming focused it's something anyone can find an element they know of.
