This is my third time reviewing this movie, I’ve covered the theatrical and the digital release prior. I have to say, it’s still entertaining to watch and just as charming as the previous times. It takes one of the most iconic characters in gaming and throws them into the real world. It follows a realistic yet familiar Sonic (Ben Schwartz) that’s been cast off and stuck on Earth in a particular little town.
It’s somewhat of a road trip movie in its styling, but relies heavily on the warm hearted presentation from the lead characters of which it largely delivers on. It has some good laughs, various references to the current times and is largely a family oriented film. It definitely will deliver most for the younger audience, but I also find it charming. It’s also great to have Tom (James Marsden) as Sonic’s good guy donut lord pal throughout. It works well, and creates a surprisingly enjoyable duo to watch in action.
In opposition to that team, you also have a terrifyingly awesome 90’s style Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik which continues to be delightful to see in action. I will note that the CGI at times could have been better, but for the most part its fine and it’s great to see the character come alive like he does in this movie.
The Sonic the Hedgehog 4k Blu-Ray comes with a number of special features. These are available to view on the traditional Blu-Ray disc as opposed to the 4k one. That is, except for the commentary featuring Director Jeff Fowler and Sonic’s voice actor Ben Schwartz. The others on the traditional disc include the following selections that can be viewed individually.
“Around the World in 80 Seconds”, “Speed Me Up music video”, “For the Love of Sonic”, “Building Robotnik with Jim Carrey”, The Blue Blur“, “Sonic on Set”, “a gag reel” and “Deleted scenes”.
It’s generally still a great offering of extra content. It would have been nice to get it all on the 4k disc though, but I do appreciate the commentary being present there. The background development information was interesting to see, and you learn a lot about how certain aspects of the film were shaped. I was impressed with the visual quality, the 4k resolution is gorgeous though it does make some of the CGI stick out a tad bit more. The HDR does add a nice balance to a number of really stand out scenes, so that was great to see in action.
The Sonic the Hedgehog 4k Blu-Ray package is a great time within a solid release that’s backed by a number of interesting extras to round out the overall experience. This movie continues to be a lot of fun, and I continue to be happy to cover it.
It’s just delightful in how well they make this character and the story come alive. It’s new, yet feels right on the par for what we should be getting in this scenario. Not every aspect of this is perfect, and it definitely leans on the family aspect of the character a lot. I think that does work out well for it, and hopefully we get to see the blue blur on more adventures down the road.
I note that as I believe this will likely be the last time I review this particular iteration of the film. This is a good movie for general audiences, and definitely an enjoyable one for sure. Good laughs, a fast time and some wild action.
