Christopher Robin is a charming and gritty modern take on the classic tale of Winnie the Pooh. It's a live action feature that follows a young boy as he witnesses various pains and becomes an adult that no longer believes. The man has a hard time balancing work and family with countless pressures forcing him to cancel a planned trip to their cottage. Things are just as dark at the Hundred Acre Woods as Pooh (voiced by Jim Cummings) cannot find any of his friends.
It's then through a bit of magic that the two are able to connect once more. It's an interesting look at the era being a well crafted time piece and you see that reflected in the gorgeous style used on the iconic stuffed characters. Ewan McGregor also delivers as Christopher Robin delivering a solid balance of serious work attitude and having that youthful joy when required. It was certainly a darker tale than anticipated, but it works well and adds some realism to the whole situation. It's still just as fun as you expect it to be and something for all ages.
The Christopher Robin Blu-Ray comes with a number of special features. These are available to view on the traditional single disc setup unlike in 4k where it would most likely be split. The extras include the following selections that can be viewed individually. The extras here include "A Movie is Made for Pooh", "Pooh and Friends Come to Life", "Pooh Finds His Voice" and "Pooh and Walt Become Friends".
I was very disappointed with the lack of extra features with this one, it's practically just the movie. The extras are not very long and leave a taste of what could have been very interesting additional viewing options. I did enjoy them, but they felt more like something you'd watch online for a minute or two as an advertisement for the film as opposed to being a featured extra. I thought the behind the scenes look was nice, but they didn't go far enough with it.
The Christopher Robin Blu-Ray disappoints in terms of extras, but the film itself is still an excellent representation of the classic characters. It presents them perfectly well using a beautiful fabric style that feels authentic to the time it aims to present. This is certainly a darker take on the characters, but still something fun with all the heart you'd expect from this group of stuffed friends.
It's also a bit about capturing the excitement of being young and not being entirely tied to work. It's a fun adventure with some laughs to be had, and a daring mission across a rather bleak landscape. The cast was great, the work on the Pooh team was incredible and it is a well put together film.
