Lego Star Wars Terrifying Tales is a Disney+ Original short film that provides some what if types of scenarios where Poe Dameron (Jake Green) teams up with a youth at Vader’s old castle, now a resort to deal with haunting moments. There’s a spooky caretaker for this fortress and he’s up to some sneaky things with the heroes having to stop that, eventually.
It basically hops along different moments in the Star Wars series with a tad bit of horror to it. Keep in mind this is for the younger audience and that was painfully noticeable as I just didn’t find it very entertaining. I really liked the Holiday special they did last year and this just didn’t feel quite the same. I actually found it rather boring, which is a shame as the universe is so ripe to have fun with in this context.
I will note it was a fun surprise to see Kylo Ren being voiced by Christian Slater. Anyways, a new Hutt has purchased Darth Vader’s old castle. It’s being renovated into the galaxy’s first all-inclusive Sith inspired luxury hotel. There’s a crash as per usual and Poe needs to deal with the problems that arise.
The animation work here is actually decently impressive. It looked clean, but at the same time sparse and that makes sense for the type of budget that was likely given to it. It still looked very good while streamed and I appreciated the smaller details that were present. The LEGO format is once again delightful to see within this universe and it makes it easier for the younger audience to take it all in.
It aims to highlight some darker aspects of the universe in a fun way, but for me at least just fell flat there. It wasn’t too funny which these types of takes on the universe are and it wasn’t really all that horrifying either. Keeping in mind that I’m fully aware what audience this is attempting to reach, the Muppets Haunted Mansion special does that better for instance.
Lego Star Wars Terrifying Tales isn’t really all too exciting of a special and a bit of waste of the source material available to be played with. I don’t really carry too many expectations for these types of shows, and at least with the holiday one I had fun. This was rather quite boring to watch and it was hard to keep interested in what was being shown.
The target audience may have some fun with this one, but I’m also not too sure about that. I’d like to see more efforts like this, but I hope there’s a bit of a check on how the comedy or aimed for style is approached.
