Blockers Review

The film Blockers follows three lifelong friends Julie (Kathryn Newton), Kayla (Geraldine Viswanathan) and Sam (Gideon Adlon). These girls make it their mission to lose their virginity on prom night. After their parents Lisa (Leslie Mann), Mitchell (John Cena), and Hunter (Ike Barinholtz), respectively; discover their daughter’s sex pact; they make it their mission to stop them by any means necessary.

Although each parent is at a different points in their life; Lisa is a single mother, Hunter is trying to be the fun father after getting a divorce, and Mitchell is overprotective father, all try to do the best for their children. Blockers, was directed by Kay Cannon (she wrote the “Pitch Perfect” movies, and episodes of 30 Rock but this is her first time directing) and her style shows through the film.

The story is constantly pushed forward by the three daughters trying to have the best night of their lives and their parent’s quest to stop them from having a good time, but the story was put together well and flowed great.

The movie is crude but hilarious and keeps you laughing the whole the time. John Cena was the funniest part of the film, from butt chugging a 40 (the best part of the movie in my opinion) to hiding in a dark house while the owners are walking around blindfolded. I feel as though the story is really relatable not only to teens who are going to their prom, but also how the parents feel when their children head out into the night.

It highlights how the kids think their parents are annoying as well as being too controlling, and highlights how the parents think their children are growing up too fast while trying to help when their kids don’t need it anymore.

The Conclusion

I would say that John Cena was the star of the film. The supporting actors were good and help round out the casting of the film. Everybody brought their own kind of funny to film to make it as good as you could get.

My one problem with the casting of Blockers was that it seemed like John Cena and Leslie Mann had more chemistry with each other than Cena had with Sarayu Blue who was supposed play Cena’s loving wife.

It was nice to see a big guy like Cena become a sensitive guy who shows emotion when it comes to his baby girl. Kathryn, Geraldine, and Gideon all interact well with each other, playing best friends very well. If you like crude comedies carried by a strong cast that gives non-stop laughter then Blockers is the movie for you!
