The film career expo event was an event where individuals could meet representatives from local film organizations to learn about opportunities available within the industry. Unfortunately, the event was underwhelming with only two booths available for patrons to speak to.
Representatives from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 212 were eager to talk and answer questions about the film industry. IATSE Local 212 provides a variety of opportunities for film and theatre technicians to find contract jobs in Calgary and surrounding areas and work towards an ACTRA status. Their focus is to help stimulate the film and theatre industry. For more information about IATSE Local 212 check out their Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram @IATSELOCAL212.
Representatives from QI Software a Calgary based indie studio were also present and interested in recruiting for positions at their studio. Currently QI Software is developing Dead Matter, an open-world survival-based videogame set in Alberta Canada.
One patron I spoke to was a recent graduate from the University of Lethbridge with a major in New Media studies. She was attending the film career expo to hand out her resume to local film organizations. Though she wasn’t able to hand out many resumes given the small turnout of organizations, she was happy to connect with IATSE Local 212 and ask questions to industry professionals.
The film career expo was not bustling with business this year, but hopefully Calgary International Film Festival hosts a similar event next year and will have more local film organizations for patrons to connect with.
