Coco Review

Coco is another amazing animated film by Disney Pixar. The main star of this music orientated masterpiece is Miguel (voiced by Antony Gonzalez). Miguel is a twelve-year-old boy from a small Mexican town. He is born into a family of shoe makers that forbid anyone and anything related to music, but all Miguel wants to be is a musician. When a musical mishap happens on the eve of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Miguel and his street dog Dante ends up in the Land of the Dead. Enlisting the help of Hector (voiced by Gael Garcia Bernal), Miguel must find Ernesto De La Cruz (voiced by Benjamin Bratt) to become a true a musician before his time there runs out.

Dia de los Muertos is a celebration in Mexico where the living, celebrate and remember the deceased members of their family. They lay out leaves to guide the spirits and lay out offerings on altars to please the dead. Coco does an excellent job of following these traditions well, but also puts their own magical Disney spin on it. It’s very respectful of the culture and presents it tastefully.

The animation in Coco is excellently done. The whole film looks stunning, vibrant colours with perfect animation makes this film the whole package. Coco portrays the Mexican culture perfectly, from the strong family ties to how they celebrate Day of the Dead and all the beliefs that come with it. The music also has a very mariachi vibe to it, which also fits into the overall Mexican culture of the film. The music fits in well. The voice actors in Coco merge together in unique and strong ways. The chemistry between the few main talents and all the supporting talents was great, it really felt like they were all family.

I personally think the best part of the film is the strong family roots that the film is trying to influence. This most clearly shown in the scene where the lead first meets his deceased family members, but they all know who he is and treat him like they were ones who were raising him.

The Conclusion

In conclusion, Coco is a strong family orientated movie, heavily influenced by the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Day). With mariachi music throughout the film that aspect really adds to the overall feel of the movie.

Coco is an amazing animated film by Disney Pixar, another to join the roster of their great animated releases. All the voice actors took their roles very seriously performing perfectly, and they all blended together well. Coco is a must watch movie.
