Fucktoys Review

This is a really out there sort of film, it’s quite something and very adult in nature just so you are aware when looking at it. It’s just a wild ride and really over the top in an insane but believably weird world. In Trashtown we follow a young woman AP (Annapurna Sriram) as she attempts to deal with a horrifically bad curse that’s impacting her life.

She’s been promised by too many psychics to get rid of the curse by paying $1000 and sacrificing a baby lamb. It’s quite a premise that’s delivered right off the bat and we see her scooter around making money, visiting psychics and building towards a moment that will hopefully free her from this problem. Along the way in what’s a reimagining of “The Fool’s Journey” of tarot we see her do all sorts of acts to produce money as wild moments continue to escalate.

She’s joined by Danni (Sadie Scott) who’s along for the ride of a lifetime and the two see all kinds of things in what’s a tightly compact, well paced narrative. It’s not necessarily too surprising in terms of twists, but it has some fun moments to it balanced with darker points and it’s very effective in its storytelling making it a compelling experience to witness.

This is presented in a very stylistic visual aesthetic, a lush 16mm straight up fever dream of a setup. It really has such a distinct coloring to it and that helps set the mood and the moments that happen. When you think about the overall acts and experiences going on it’s truly quite dark. It’s what she knows, but yeah it is kind of wild to see this spiraling death curse and the acts she performs to spend more figuring this whole thing out along the way.

As mentioned this is quite adult so there are many sexual acts that you will see throughout the movie and some rather gruesome bits as well so you are warned in here. There is levity to what happens though, as some moments were rather funny along the way and the fun of the leads sort of assists greatly in seeing the story progress.

The Conclusion

Fucktoys is a wild, insane and genuinely just out there sort of ride as this lady of the night does whatever she can to lift a horrifying curse. It’s really fun, weird and just bizarre. I enjoy strange movies and this one fits the bill nicely in that regard.

It was slightly predictable as things began to roll across the story but it’s really nicely done and I believe you’ll just sort of go with it and still be in a deep shock as things come to full fruition. It’s a really distinct unique film and if you’re looking for something that will surprise you this one delivers there. Sriram does a wonderful job as the lead here carrying the movie from its dark lows to entertaining highs. Very entertaining, sad and still a wild ride.
