Game Night Review

Game Night is an excellent comedy that's both dark and action packed. It's got great pacing that provides a mix of twists and turns along the way. You're never sure what exactly is happening and that keeps it ever so fresh the entire way through. The general narrative follows Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) which are both game enthusiasts.

They host game nights for their friends and this is an essential part of their life. Everyone in the group looks forward to these events and you can clearly get a sense of this squad having a long history of epic game based battles. Max's brother then comes back into the picture after being gone a long time with a desire to host the ultimate night. This involves a planned kidnapping and a series of events where no one know what's real or fake.

Things go a bit wrong and eventually it becomes less of a game and more leaning towards where everything could be real. This is presented in a rather hilarious way as everyone is so casual about the events of the night when crazy things are going on. The switch is great and it only continues to drive an enjoyable watch. The various groups involved worked well together each having their own unique comedic bit going on. This only continued to build as the film progressed with the side characters having some decent progression as well as the core group.

Not only were the laughs good, but the general material and narrative was exciting. I was further impressed by the fantastic camera work with a lot of the transitions being rather slick. It all came together for a pleasing an exciting time.

The cast performed well each filling a role within the comedy and progressing the plot. There were a fair bit of folks at play with each being an essential part towards the overall experience. It was nice to see secondary characters that mattered and brought their own laughs even when they weren't with the rest of the group. There was a nice balance of action, intrigue and humor that worked towards an intense Game Night.

The Conclusion

Game Night was a blast providing creative comedic elements throughout what was an exciting and well paced film. The cast was excellent each giving something distinct to the plot while filling their core roles well. The leads had wonderful chemistry that worked well as they battled to win at various games and then applied that to what they thought was a more active game.

There was the perfect balance of comedy with story and a fun, yet dark story going on. There were so many creepy and still hilarious moments throughout as the film lightly touched upon multiple genres. There's some action, well placed laughs and enough turns to keep you guessing on what exactly is going on. It's mostly just a really fun experience and something that felt entirely fresh.
