Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Review

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 is the strong continuation of Marvel's galactic series. It's a standalone film in the sense that it doesn't really build towards the cinematic universe, but instead grows the Guardians. Some time has passed and we're left with a more matured and confident squad.

This is shown by the hilarious opening music sequence to "Mr. Blue Sky" that was done in such an incredibly interesting way. It really does keep that same line of laughs from the first one, but not to the same level opting to add a darker tone. It's certainly more serious while it works on developing the various characters within this universe.

Everyone is given a partner from which they develop and go over issues that were initially stated in the first. The core squad is still there in full force with Starlord (Chris Pratt) taking the key role as he comes across his celestial father. I'll keep this aspect somewhat open as not spoil anything, but it's an interesting connection and one you may not expect. Joining him is Mantis (Pom Klementieff) who works so perfectly with Drax (Dave Bautista) as she's ultra innocent with Yondu (Michael Rooker) returning in a more present role and Nebula (Karen Gillan) also getting similar treatment while having her character gain purpose.

The interactions between the crew were great and it was excellent to see some dark tones come into play. It was also very different from other Marvel properties branching away from just being another entry in the series. Sure, there will be impacts on everyone else with events that took place though nothing to push it forward. It feels very much like the original, with just slightly less of a comedic focus which works for the better.

The music was great, perhaps not as iconic with what it'll do to the songs yet just as great. The movie was bright, full of color and most importantly wonder. It's also quickly growing into a larger universe than what I expected and they might need some spin-offs to properly handle such a varied group of characters that have been set in motion. I'll also mention since the screening was in 3D that it looked fine with some standout moments.

The Conclusion

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was funny, full of action and another excellent addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The darker tones were well adapted and I liked how they gave each set of characters just enough development. Baby Groot was adorable, yet never annoying having just enough screen time.

The worlds were vibrant, the characters were all fun and it was another fantastic Guardians of the Galaxy. I even enjoyed it more than the first finding it to be an amazing continuation of the series and look forward to what adventures the group will go on next towards the Infinity Wars.
