Kevin Hart: What Now? Review

Kevin Hart’s What Now? Is a stand-up comedy film starring himself. “What Now?” was filmed while Kevin Hart was on his 2015 tour of the same name. This specific show was in his hometown at Philadelphia's outdoor venue, Lincoln Financial Field in front of a crowd of 50,000 people setting a new record for comedians everywhere which helped him become the highest paid comedian.

“What Now?” starts off as a typical Bond movie featuring the lovely vocals of Kevin Hart himself and opening into a funny short of Kevin Hart portraying the role of agent 0054. This portion was a spoof spinoff of James Bond in Casino Royal. This featured Kevin playing poker, and not being all so great at it as well building up feuds with everyone at the poker table. The CGI that was included was good, but very noticeable most of the time. With star studded cameos like Halle Berry as herself; Don Cheadle as himself, and Ed Helms as their bartender, throw in some action and you have a great opening sequence.

After the opening scene the core stand up portion of the movie begins. I must say this is the best part of the movie, a straight hour of just laughing. Kevin Hart’s personality on stage is perfect; all his jokes were spot on, super relatable and hilarious.

Kevin also had a digital backdrop that changed with jokes he told which added another dynamic to the whole show. The stand up portion is about an hour long, it’s probably the most I have laughed this whole year. I liked how it kept cutting to the audience to show them laughing and having a good time. It’s a shame that it didn’t last longer and the only down side was all the profanity; some people might not enjoy it.

Lastly, after the stand up portion of the movie Kevin Hart descends the stage to a very concerned Halle Berry telling him that they need to go now. This jumps to a car chase and a helicopter ride sequence, then the movie ends abruptly. I feel like the movie didn’t need this final end scene or should have made it longer and having more to it.

The Conclusion

Kevin Hart’s “What Now?” was a very enjoyable film and one of the best films I’ve seen all year. Every aspect of it was spot on. I’ve always enjoyed Kevin Hart as an actor, and was always a fan of his stand up before hand, he did not let me down here. His personality and stage presence is great. From the opening to the closing of his stand up, it was a very tight knit movie. With only flaws in some CGI and a botched ending, “What Now?” was nearly flawless.
