Ol Parker (Now is Good, Imagine Me & You) directs this 10 year in the making sequel to the ABBA based musical hit Mamma Mia! This sequel “Here We Go Again” picks up one year after where the first movie ended. The film opens with Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) working on finishing up the hotel that her mother Donna (Meryl Streep) was working on in the first film. This film also goes into further depth about Donna’s past which features the same cast but with new faces, and of course some new ABBA songs! The up and coming actress Lily James plays Young Donna and does so very well. While learning about her mother’s past and how she met her three possible dads, Sophie discovers that she herself is pregnant at a young age as well.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again features a star studded cast Including Amanda Seyfried, Lily James, Colin Firth, Cher, Meryl Streep and many more. All of the above have a ton of experience alone, not to mention the collective resume from the whole cast. It’s impressive that they were able to get all the cast back, as well as younger versions of almost everyone. To my surprise everyone cast fit well together. This film had an excellent group and everyone blended together so well, they all seem to actually care about how good the quality of the film would be.
Although, one of our main stars Lily James is one of the least experienced on the list, she only has a ton of musical talent under her belt. I must say this installment was beautifully shot, lovely scenery, vibrant colours and great choreography. Although, filmed in Croatia the film takes place on a small island in Greece. Not only were the surroundings beautiful, the camera work was also done expertly. No surprise that it took them 10 years to make.
The film does a split story, I’m not sure how hard that is to do, but they managed to pull it off, and do it fairly well. Although the film didn’t really bring anything new with it (except some more ABBA songs!) it was still enjoyable to watch. But, if you’re not an avid ABBA fan, you might not know some of the songs that were included in the film, such as “When I Kissed the Teacher”, and “Kisses of Fire”, It does feature some of the fan favourites like “Fernando”, “Waterloo” and of course “Mamma Mia”.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was a good musical and keeps the audience engaged. It features many of the popular songs by the once hugely famous singing group ABBA. This sequel took 10 years to make and does show that the time makes sense with how good the film was. However, in my opinion this film isn’t an instant classic like the first one was. But, if you like ABBA and enjoyed the first film you’ll likely enjoy this one as well.
