Mile 22 Review

Mile 22 is the newest action film added to the ever growing and impressive resume of Mark Wahlberg. In this film Wahlberg plays James Silva, the leader of a top secret government squad. Alice Kerr (Lauren Cohan) is his second in command (or so it looks), together with their squad they are assigned to escort and protect a low level police officer Li Noor (Iko Uwaid) 22 miles across the city while trying to keep themselves alive in the process.

This is to get the codes for the missing nuclear materials that only he knows. Luckily for our heroes they have some help from the eye in the sky Overwatch who’s fronted by Bishop (John Malkovich). I must say it is nice to see the former UFC champ Ronda Rousey make an appearance in the film no matter how small her role might be. Do our heroes have what it take to get Li safe from their base to the airport or will they perish trying?

The legendry Peter Berg (Lone Survivor, Battleship) as the director of Mile 22, and with Lea Carpenter and Graham Roland (Jack Ryan, Fringe) backing him you can’t go wrong. These three did an awesome job putting this film together, and making sure everything made sense and flowed well. The film looked great and they did an excellent job giving equal screen time to everyone and showing the different resources a secret government team might actually use. Every time you put Wahlberg and Berg together you get gold. Their list together is already super impressive with films like Lone Survivor and Patriots Day; they always make gritty and intense movies and Mile 22 is no different.

The entire cast put in a ton of hard work to create this film, and it really pays off in the quality of their performances. Of course having Mark Wahlberg as your front man doesn’t hurt anything.

It was nice to see Lauren Cohan step out of her comfort zone and star in a big block buster such as this. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction for her. I personally don’t know too much about Iko Uwais but his performance was good and his work in The Raid was great.

The Conclusion

Mile 22 is a gritty action packed tale that the audience will love. The film has tons of action to get you engaged, and keep you there. It also does a good at showing how committed US secret tactical units are, displaying that they’ll do anything for their mission.

The film makes you feel for the characters very well in such a short time that you’re committed to them and wishing them the best. With some tears and surprises Mile 22 will without a doubt be a movie to watch if you like Mark Wahlberg and action (but, I mean who doesn’t).
