Pilgrimage Review

In 13th century Ireland, a group of monks transport this box which contains a mystical and holy item. It's got a deep connection to their faith and has been hidden within the sea for a very long time. That's essentially the focus of the story as they get some spiel about taking this relic since it's of the upmost importance to their faith and church. The film follows this group as they attempt to make it across the treacherous landscape in order to deliver it. It's somewhat hard to explain in the sense that they just carry this box around.

It goes into discussion about certain religious antics and how devout the monks are to their faith. They come across certain differing companies and will have to decide how to further protect the item moving forward. I could almost sum up its entirety in a simple sentence, but that would most certainly cause a spoiler while also highlighting how empty this felt. There were some decent scenes of violence, but overall it didn't feel like there was a whole lot going on here and the moments of tension didn't quite deliver.

The key members of the monk group included the very quiet young Brother Diarmuid (Tom Holland) and the mute (Jon Bernthal). Diarmuid doesn't know much of the world and was alright in this performance I suppose. Bernthal plays the mute well being a tough muscle for the monks and defending the kid from hostile threats.

There's also some sort of redemption line in there I guess though nothing is really shown in that regard. The film generally looked fine showcasing some nice landscapes and it captured the time period well. It felt somewhat simple though I suppose that's the point when touring off the road. The combat scenes were decent yet brief and typically featured intimate conflicts.

The Conclusion

I'm not sure if Pilgrimage felt rushed or that in the time it was shown nothing exciting happened within it. By the end of the film I didn't feel anything of interest towards it and found it to be an average viewing. If you like these historic type pieces it might be fine, or are intense about certain religious events.

The movie really didn't want to touch upon any subject too heavily aside from some folks going over the top about their faith to this plain object. This isn't something I find to be negative since many people at that time were very religious, it should just come across as meaning something bigger or of importance to the narrative and to give their journey purpose. I wasn't a fan of Pilgrimage, it wasn't terrible to watch though I certainly wouldn't care to again.
