Ready or Not 2: Here I Come Review

Years back I thoroughly enjoyed the experience that was Ready or Not. Taking the concept of hide and seek, but turning it into a movie that actually works was such a pleasant surprise. It’s been quite a journey in finally getting a sequel so many years later and I think the gap was perhaps a little too long.

I enjoyed this second romp, but it was also really quite derivative of that first run. Almost too similar at times with some slightly sillier moments, but at the same time it did expand the universe and gave us another fun run of balanced insanity. This one starts right off from where the original film ended, Grace (Samara Weaving) is brought to a hospital and is being questioned about what happened.

It provides some good setup for those that skipped the original movie so you can skip that one to watch this, but I don’t recommend doing so. Anyways, at the hospital she’s joined by her out of nowhere sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) and during their bickering the two through some situations are dragged into a bigger game of hide and seek.

It’s a silly idea, but it makes sense whilst still retreading what happened prior. It also sort of limits the scope of going further if they wanted to, but I’m sort of pleased with this perhaps just being a duology of films.

The performances here are about on par for the original while getting a little more outlandish from the supporting cast. I really enjoy seeing both Weaving and Newton in films so I loved seeing the combination here as sisters.

The level of violence was also about on par with the original with both getting thrown about and greatly damaged as a group of folks tried to eliminate them. I wouldn’t say there’s anything too surprising twists or turns wise and it plays out well. I found some aspects to be a bit puzzling or stick out awkwardly, such as the bride getting back into her dress or placement at the start of the chase.

Many of these moments popped up and sort of hurt the journey a tad along the way. Still, the journey was fun and looked great with the large scale estate area of selection for this one providing some interesting backdrops to the conflict that was ongoing.

The Conclusion

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come doesn’t reinvent the wheel being largely a retread of the original but I enjoyed it for being just that. I loved the first film, so it was fun to go through it again with a different setting an expanded cast. I felt that some aspects got a tad too outlandish that made the original feel way more grounded.

Still, they have fun with it and being a comedic sort of horror film it works well. The leads were great together and while some plot elements didn’t totally make sense I was satisfied through the journey. I had some laughs, not as many as the first and the horror elements were enjoyable.

I do wish they would have done more with some twists and I’m really not sure where you’d take this towards a possible third entry but I would like to see more from this series yet at the same time am totally pleased with these films as just a duo.

It works, it’s got some good moments and it’s a fun ride. I could see this being a fun combo viewing night as I did literally watch the first right before checking out the second and they flow nicely together.
