Spider-Man: Homecoming Review

Spider-Man: Homecoming is essentially the perfect combination of what makes this character so amazing while proudly welcoming him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While he was originally introduced in Civil War, this is the first big display of the character in action as a solo act and while there have been a couple takes on Spidey this one hits just right. It's got a well set balance of Peter Park and Spider-Man as there are often complaints about how either side is portrayed. This is boosted by showing us the correct setting of him actually being a kid in high school while struggling with life.

Few other heroes face the same sort of issues of doing the whole friendly neighborhood thing while also having a life. It'll be incredible to see this take last for awhile and hopefully get to see a full long version of Spider-Man. Things start off with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) adjusting to life after The Avengers schism and then to the side of that Michael Keaton's Vulture. This Vulture is one of the better villains having more of a background and reason to what he does while directing connecting to Spider-Man.

The narrative was actually solid and followed Peter as he struggled with trying to become a true Avenger. The whole Vulture scenario was his perfect chance to prove himself and it's a blast to see the many issues along the way. As part of classic Spidey there's supposed to be this awkward sort of way in going about everything and that was well displayed here. There were stumbles, great jokes and a kid that had no idea what he was doing while trying to be in the big leagues.

Iron Man was also present though very much acting as a minor father figure providing guidance. This was followed by many, many references to the MCU. I typically love seeing these, but I felt like they were trying a tad hard to push that over. This due to it being a joint effort with Sony and I could see how they're desperate to cash in with this partnership, which is fine as this is a glorious thing to have. It also would have been better to see the school side of things shown more as it was present yet mostly just to have him go to different settings.

The Conclusion

Spider-Man: Homecoming is everything I've wanted and more. Right from the opening classic theme I had extremely high hopes and excitement. The film looks great providing the quality environments, destruction and settings one would expect. The MCU is brought to extreme heights with some minor cameos and I'm not sure if that was a good thing.

It feels like its own separate world that's squished between the bigger worldly problems and it does push the overall universe forward in time. I would have liked to see some more school time though it delivers in action and has enough to be fine. Homecoming was a solid start and it would be fantastic to see this series grow since it was delivered so well here.
