Star Wars: The Last Jedi Review

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is completely unique in that it's part of a franchise with lots of pressure, reoccurring events and does something entirely new with it. The film takes place immediately after the events of "The Force Awakens: and instead of presenting us with some intense battle across the cosmos it's just an escape. The entire narrative is driven by parties of desperate individuals that are just attempting to flee. The First Order has the Resistance on their last legs and it's really all about working towards finishing them off.

This is then opposed by the work Rey is doing in order to sway Luke Skywalker back into the fold. Past events and the years have left their mark upon on the old Jedi master. It's a split perspective where you see multiple Rebels trying to create escape plans and then Rey dealing with a tired old man. This is perfectly well done as we get that sense of loss, but a continuous look at failures and how every character has them. This is less about grand battles and more focused on the characters learning, growing and moving into the roles that will define them for episode nine.

Not only do we get an emotional tale that continues decades of film, we get a deeper look into the force and it's impact across the galaxy. This is also the most gorgeous entry in the franchise bringing a wide range of color, design and stunning beauty in every shot. Some of these are strikingly incredible such as a still shot after the jump to lightspeed. The planets carry a similar theme and while limited, there were distinct new entries.

There was such a perfect sense of surprise and it was incredible to have no idea what would happen. Every turn provided a fresh twist and having this feeling during a Star Wars film was enchanting. The acting was fantastic from the great set of newer characters from episode seven to the many returning classic ones. Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker was particularly amazing and truly captured the essence of the character.

The Conclusion

The Last Jedi is exactly what the franchise needed, it delivered on a completely distinct entry in the series and did so while providing a chain of complete surprises. The film was a pleasure to view as every scene was simply stunning and the direction of the narrative was chilling.

The desperation to escape was well displayed and it was great to see the series get something that leaves such a marking on the overall series. There were some fun surprises thrown in and very creative uses for some of the characters. This is definitely the perfect Star Wars film as it continues the themes that made the series so exciting while presenting us with something distinctly different.
