When I stop to think about it The Conjuring was probably my favorite horror film of all time as it genuinely chilling, suspenseful and most of all terrifying. I'm not a huge fan of the horror genre to be honest as I love light-hearted films, yet there's something about both of these movies that's just beyond excellent.
The Conjuring 2 is right up there with not only the quality of the world the film creates, but the story as well. The film starts off with the Warrens, Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) coming off a big case to settle down for a bit as ominous beings are starting to catch up with them.
While this is being developed we also have the core of the story which revolves around this young girl named Janet (Madison Wolfe) and her poor family that resides in Britain. Things start off small for just a few minutes before getting absolutely crazy and I was pleasantly terrified of the all the happenings.
There were some fantastic jump scares mixed in with many moments of suspense that I normally don't elicit when watching films. It was almost much more complex than just being a straight up possession or haunting as it did a great job of throwing the story around and not letting us know much of what was happening, but with small hints if you watch carefully.
The narrative was just perfect and for a horror film it was top notch with little competition that even comes close to the level of actual fear this film builds. That aside I also wanted to mention how absolutely fantastic the world is, it's so authentic as the film is a time piece and the atmosphere is stunning. The camera work was also great looking solid throughout the film with many well done shots.
This was further complicated by the amazing effects and all these aspects came together ever so well. The acting was also great as the family looked terrified, the young girl was key as well being the center piece and that was some believable horror. Everyone in the cast did a great job in their roles and the Warrens were once again a solid grouping. I also liked that despite being of this genre it still had some lighter moments and just a few minor jokes in the mix occasionally as well.
The Conjuring 2 is genuinely horrific and just slightly lower than the first one. This isn't negative at all as this film was an amazing horror piece and should be looked at as a standard to other films of the genre.
I'm really hoping we do get a third one at some point perhaps sooner than the gap between these two as I'm definitely left wanting to see more of this series. It's all just so well done providing an authentic experience in setting while developing such a strong story as well. The Conjuring 2 is a great film in general and one of the best horror films I've ever seen.
