The Meg Review

Jon Turteltaub, director of the National Treasure films takes a stab at a shark movie. The Meg is an action film set at Mana One Research Station off the Chinese Coast which is funded by billionaire Jack Morris (Rainn Wilson) . The movie follows a team with the main focus on Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) and Suyin (Li Bingbing) to find the Megladon before it attacks again. The Megalodon is a giant prehistoric shark that was thought to be extinct until the research facility does a deep-sea dive to the deepest trench in the Pacific in a sub and gets attacked.

The sub is stranded down there with the crew trapped inside. That’s where Jonas Taylor, one of the only people that has ever done this type of deep-sea dive and lived to tell the tale is introduced into the story. He is chosen by Mac (Cliff Curtis) and Dr. Minway (Winston Chao) with the disapproval of his daughter Suyin and Dr. Heller (Robert Taylor). Now with the Megalodon on the loose the team the team must find a way to kill it, before it kills them. The movie leads us on a thrill-seeking adventure through the waters in the Pacific to try and find the Shark before it attacks more people.

The film does a great job of building the story line, it starts off in the past with Jonas Taylor doing a deep-sea dive to save a crew in a submarine. He is almost out with most of the crew including Dr. Heller when something attacks the sub leaving Jonas to make a tough decision that leads to a downward spiral until five years later when the story picks up again.

When he is chosen this time around to help save the crew it is met with some hesitation but there is no one better. The crew find a way to work together despite different agenda’s, some want the Megladon alive (for research) and others want it dead. Each member of the cast brings their own personality to the characters and the storyline benefits from it. The film makers did a great job with the CGI especially the Megladon, giving it that prehistoric look, they really focused on the little touches.

The Conclusion

THE MEG had plenty of comedic relief that had the theater laughing but fell short on delivering us a thrilling tale. The film does have a few twists and turns to keep the viewers attention, but I would have liked to see a bit more gore and sense of danger.

Compared to other movies that kill off most of their cast, this one focused a lot on the hero aspect and didn’t give us the amount of deaths we expected. Overall the movie had many good qualities and great acting but didn’t quite live up to the hype.
