The Sheep Detectives Review

The general premise here is that a shepherd of sheep is murdered and his sheep solve the mystery. It sounds a bit odd, but it’s an enticing concept and the execution here is quite excellent. It’s a little more youth oriented in its targeting audience wise than I had anticipated but it’s still a lovely and very entertaining whodunit. The mystery of it all is very fun to watch unwind and I think clever keeping me pondering throughout. That’s impressive.

The story starts with a grizzled but happy shepherd, George Hardy (Hugh Jackman) tending to his sheep. He’s sending off a letter about the life he lives and then things start to build up to set the stage. There’s a town of unique individuals as is always the case for these mysteries. An inept police officr played by Nicholas Braun, another shepherd Caleb (Tosin Cole) and a lady running the hotel Beth (Hong Chau).

There are others, but you get the point that you start meeting the characters and then the murder happens! From there it’s a split between the actions of people, but from the perspective of the various sheep that all have distinct personalities. Some of the sheep are smarter than others, or try to remember more and it’s neat to see the group try to figure out what happened.

It’s actually a well shot and presented film. The visuals and style of the sheep is perfect and really believable. They’re sheep of course, but you really do believe in their presented emotions and situations. The performances are excellent and rather moving.

This should really bring out some emotions, particularly for the younger ones. It’s sort of light in terms of approach making it more youth focused for content, but still has the darker elements that make it enjoyable for all audiences. It’s got some funny bits, some emotional ones and it’s a good tearjerker to engage with.

The Conclusion

The Sheep Detectives is a very clever whodunit that will keep you guessing and is a perfect entry point for the younger ones into this type of movie. It’s also fun for other audiences as well as they hide things effectively, but at the same time it could very well be figured out upon reflection.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was funny, charming and delivered upon its emotional stakes. I liked the characters and the world from the perspective of these sheep. It’s a really great time with a nice mix of mystery and story.
