Zoolander 2 Review

Zoolander has always been one of my favorite comedies to go back and watch for really just a silly dumb comedy. The sequel was disappointing on so many levels which really does suck since I've been waiting on this one for awhile. At a certain point it changes from being a movie and instead is a series of clips filled with cameos to the point you have to wonder if they're even considered cameos.

Aside from the endless parade of famous people popping in for mostly unfunny scenes the movie itself is very weak. It starts out alright at least in establishing where everyone has been and what's happened with even some decent laughs at the start. Though even before the halfway point it reduces itself into something absolutely ridiculous with an absolutely terrible ending portion.

We learn that Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and everyone around him has faced rough times since a couple days after the first movie ended. It was odd to start from that point though it got everything rolling and created an absolutely terrible sub-plot with Hansel (Owen Wilson) which wasn't at all funny.

While it was certainly great to see the entire cast back for the sequel it didn't take advantage of their strengths and instead focused far too much on stupidity. I get that it's supposed to be a dumb comedy mocking at things, but it went far too much in that direction. As far as returning actors I thought Mugatu (Will Ferrell) was probably the funniest of the group since he's the only one that realizes just how stupid everyone else is in the film.

They also went for a bit of a spy comedy with this one doing some high tech things in the name of the fashion secret service which was mostly odd though some of the presentation wasn't too bad. I definitely did enjoy the celebrities being killed aspect at the start with them really giving it to Justin Bieber though the majority of cameo appearances after weren't that good.

There was also far too many references to these two being completely outdated since their last outing and this was again stretched out far too much. I also absolutely hated every scene with that new fashion guy which presented Zoolander and Hansel their first show, he was the next level of what I wouldn't even consider a bit funny.

The Conclusion

It's hard to dig deep into the movie as it felt as though it was just a series of chained celebrity cameos piled upon each other. It builds to a story to some degree though it still felt like it fumbled along to that point. The side stories were also awful with Hansel and his orgy group being absolutely dreadful.

The Zoolander and his son areas of the movie were also awful as we don't need another person pointing out how stupid the characters are as that should be apparent. Zoolander 2 was just purely disappointing on multiple levels with the second half being just laughless, the theater was particularly quiet. I think the worst part was that I waited a long time for this sequel and had hopes for it being a decent film.
