This is a Netflix Original Series about a guy that’s dealing with life after the passing of his wife due to cancer. This third season wraps up this dreary sorrow fest and I’m quite glad to be done with it. Tony (Rick Gervais) once again has the same outlook, sinking backwards a little bit until things do eventually continue forward. It ends perhaps on a better note, but alas the character never really wants to move forward.
It seems that almost every stride taken last season, is thrown away in an attempt to really showcase this individual as a true loner. It drops a key side character, forgets others and sort of focuses on showcasing that there are other ways to deal with grief. Or at least, somewhat as this individual never can get a grip on moving on.
It really did seem like this almost should have been a one off season, or maybe stopping after the last one. It sort of lingers on like a zombie that’s well overstayed its welcome. There’s less comedy that hits here and I was really just hoping it would eventually get to an end. It was decently fine last season being an improvement to some degree over the first, but wow this was just such a waste of time. This finale did not hit the mark.
The acting efforts are fine here, just a lot of side characters don’t really have a whole lot going on with them. There was a very cringe like side family story going on that I didn’t find funny in the slightest. Even his eldest companion felt underutilized. I suppose they were going for something profound with a huge fade out moment, but by then I was just so done with this show.
The set pieces are about the same and in general it felt like the show was just going in loops in regards to story lines that had already come to go. It’s as though the guy really didn’t truly connect with anyone despite the last season’s effort at getting better. It’s quite a lonely look at an individual that was stuck in the past and just limped alone in life after a dark moment.
After Life Season 3 isn’t a great conclusion to the series, but it does wrap things up if you are a fan. I’m glad it’s finally over, as it sort of just limped along in this final season. It has the odd moment or two where it provides a laugh, but in general it feels like it’s a notch down from prior seasons. It’s great that it’s now concluded, as it really felt they were stretching things when working towards an ending.
I get what they were going for when it all wraps up, but it’s hard to feel somewhat hopeful from this sort of conclusion as it sort of shows that you can’t really improve your life and just have to deal with it. Perhaps that’s what they were aiming for. Whatever the case, wasn’t huge on the story setup or just how this one all ended.
