Attack of the Hollywood Cliches! is a Netflix Original special that is hosted by Rob Lowe with various critics and film academics popping in to talk about the most well known clichés of the industry. It’s actually rather entertaining and descriptive, covering a wide range of topics. It’s about an hour long in length and hits on all the biggest beats of what you would come across when watching movies.
It also includes quick clips and footage from many of the biggest film franchises out there. So in general it does a great job of talking about what’s out there while also visually connecting the dots. Documentary like in nature, but mostly focused on being something entertaining and comedic. It’s not necessarily super deep, but it’s engaging and fairly distinct on being something that’s easily consumed by the more casual movie viewer.
That’s what makes this fairly easy to suggest, you get so many quick bits fed in an easy to consume manner that is descriptive. I personally quite enjoyed it as it was just a greatest hits of what defines most movies that have released. At the same time, if you’re expecting something deeper you’re likely not to find that here. It’s also just a tad too cynical at times, bit too much indeed.
This was professionally shot in regards to the various interview segments that are shown. At the same time, the connection of critics or academics was just brief and almost random. The key shots with the entertaining Rob Lowe were super minimalistic and perhaps not necessarily in the best of ways.
It was edited fine in terms of the clips that came into play, they picked the right ones and had little funny bits to go alongside those. There’s not a whole lot to go over in this segment, since it’s all fairly straight forward and jumps from one element to another swiftly.
Attack of the Hollywood Cliches! is a really easy to consume look at the most classic of clichés that exist out there for the medium. It won’t be a super deep dive into that sort of thing, but I feel it covered a wide range of topics in a well set manner. I would have liked to see it be a bit more cohesive with the interview bits, but they fit well enough. Again, this is something for the more casual viewers out there. You’ll find it entertaining, perhaps learn a bit more about some of the fun parts of movies.
Basically what makes them, along with the key references that continue to have been impactful parts of them over the years. From a classic scream, to the tropes of the romantic and also some of the more cynical elements that were sort of mocked in this one. It was a fine viewing, nothing necessarily too special but one I enjoyed and would suggest if you want to just celebrate the key parts of film.
