BoJack Horseman Season 4 Review

BoJack Horseman's fourth season is slightly different from those before it aiming to provide more sorrow, but perhaps a brighter outlook. After hitting the lowest he could, BoJack (Will Arnett) leaves for a year and the show starts by displaying what everyone has been up to in that time. It's basically just a continuation of life until he returns and then things get worse for a lot of people. For those familiar with the past seasons you can expect a continuation of what's been going on while also moving past some events I would have expected to be more present within this season.

Instead, we have a new interesting angle on things as a possible daughter appears and we see BoJack attempt to get things right. It's still that whole line of him not caring, but to the degree that he's seen some growth and knows he's usually the problem. The season definitely had its moments, but with a higher focus towards drama and melancholy while the comedic aspects were toned down. Still, it had the charm and exciting style that kept my full attention throughout as it reached a fairly conclusive point.

The artwork is once again beautiful bringing high levels of detail and care in making these strange creatures to life. You can also feel for almost everyone in the show as each brings their own struggles. It feels real in that no one is particularly to blame for certain events and you can see issues being at a weight on all ends.

Many struggles continue here, others face resolution though I still would have wanted some elements from the last season be more present in the season. It does a good job at poking at certain things for comedic aspects, but it was strictly more dramatic here. There were some interesting story lines and a lot of back story to help build out the characters around BoJack. It was definitely focusing on a theme of family and that perhaps there's something out there for BoJack to care for.

The Conclusion

Whether it was a run for governor or a dive into what makes BoJack's family so broken, there were true and real moments of sorrow throughout. You could feel bad for many of the characters as they dealt with multiple issues and it's nice to see many of them evolving a lot since the start of the show. I definitely felt major parts from the last season were dropped and that the previous one was stronger.

This season hit its stride well and is a perfect next step for most of the characters. I did feel that perhaps the industry side of things was left behind here as the show dove deeper in the relationships that tie the characters together. It also wasn't quite as funny as usual though some of the jokes did deliver. BoJack Horseman Season 4 was a perfect continuation for this series and almost too easy to watch in succession.
