Disenchantment Season 4 Review

The latest season of Disenchantment once again follows Bean (Abbi Jacobson) as she attempts to keep the kingdom going smoothly while also swiftly handling the problem surrounding her mother providing a forced wedding. It mostly just continues the events of the previous season while handling various lingering plot lines and once again throwing the characters all around the kingdom. With that, the elf conflicts were delightful.

It doesn’t necessarily bring surprises, but they certainly have fun with the story as the core team which includes Elfo (Nat Faxon) and Luci (Eric Andre) all have problems to contend with, at least early on. It’s still a battle for the throne and a continued focus on King Zog (Jogn DiMaggio) having some deep issues that drone onwards.

There are elements of a mirror dimension, a tad bit of the Steamland and more perspective on where good old Elfo comes from. If you’ve watched previous seasons this one sort of just continues on with this being a hard starting point for new viewers so if you come from that perspective it’s best to start from the beginning.

The animation was once again great here bringing a high quality look and some fascinating creature designs throughout. With this taking on a fantasy setting they had some more mystical elements while also cracking jokes at that along the way.

This season has a return to form as the Steam area is only lightly touched upon. The show was generally funny too with more good moments that did lean towards being slightly dramatic as well. I don't think it quite hit the mark that Futurama could at times, and it doesn’t seem like it will after four seasons.

The core cast is great, I especially like the lead character that has continued to have some deeper moments, mermaids keep swimming in. This wasn’t structured quite as well as the first couple seasons, but it still had some fun moments to it which was appreciated.

It seems as though the characters are less party driven, but I suppose that’s because they have more goals and things that need to get done missions wise. I would have liked more side characters to come into play, as this continued to focus on just Bean which is fine I suppose. It just seems like such a rich universe to explore, but too expanded in terms of scope with this one.

The Conclusion

Disenchantment Season 4 feels like more of the same, and at the same time less of an interesting show in comparison to what the initial premise was. I still enjoy watching it, it’s an easy binge viewing for sure but at the same time I’d like to see something more dynamic go on.

This season just had some really strange moments and I’m just tired of seeing Zog’s issues as they just drag. The animation work was once again solid and I don’t really have complaints about the pacing. I’m just finding the story to be less enticing as time goes on and while I can assume I know where things are headed it seems like the overall direction is quite meandering in its presentation.

It should be neat to see a split of a character in the next season but at the same time I’m becoming less intrigued by this show as it steps into Simpsons like territory instead of having that stronger design that say, Futurama had.
