Fistful of Vengeance is a Netflix Original film that is a follow-up to the Wu Assassins. If you’re like myself and haven’t seen that series, you’re likely to be quite lost in this movie. You could watch this as a standalone and just enjoy it as an action thrill ride, but as I noted you will feel very lost on what the situation is here.
They waste no time throwing you into the action and chatting lightly about what happened in the past. The highlight of this movie is specifically that action which looks really cool, brutal and generally is fast paced. They mix in some supernatural like elements for the combat and I thought that looked rather cool in motion.
The general story is very light, and entirely straight forward. It’s a close team out for vengeance, with others joining the fold and they go from place to place until they eventually do an ending face off of sorts. That’s really all there is to the overall story, it’s not very deep and at times it feels disjointed. Despite that, it can definitely be fun and just an easy going action journey to take if you want to.
We do get to see some unique set pieces which were varied and distinct in their presentation. Each area is primed to become a battleground almost at any given time as the crew used the environment for some fun action sequences. The combat really does look cool and they have some very stylized perspectives in play here.
I believe there was a drone sequence shot that was impressively long and super distinct in its presentation. I feel if there was some stronger story beats mixed with the framing and style of this action, you’d have something truly special. Acting wise I would say they’re serious but at the same it’s not the best acting. It doesn’t take you out of things necessarily, but at the same time I felt some moments were too silly and that can create issues in making the levity of what’s going on believable.
Fistful of Vengeance has some fun moments to it with sleek and cool combat, but ultimately it’s just a fairly generic action movie. There’s nothing wrong with that of course, some will definitely enjoy the thrill ride that it provides. Others looking for more depth will find this very light from a story perspective. The acting isn’t particularly strong and it’s just sort of a random journey. They give you bits of details on the group, at the same time it appears to heavily lean on what came prior within the overall Wu Assassins series.
I could see this being an enjoyable time for fans of that, others will probably feel a bit more lost like I did. The combative movements were great here, excellent camera work and they did provide unique locations on the overall journey. At the same time it felt very light in what it offered. Certainly viewable, but not something I’d revisit in the future.
