Fullmetal Alchemist Review

Fullmetal Alchemist is rather odd, yet mostly in a fun way as they adapt the original material into a live action movie. I have no past experience with any regular Fullmetal Alchemist content so keep in that in mind as I go over this Netflix Original film. The narrative and well general goals of the core characters were interesting. There were some questions of moral decisions and a strange push towards dedication for whatever task was at hand.

I attribute this to the culture they were aiming to represent within the military controlled society. They did an alright job of explaining the various powers, yet I still didn't get the whole big deal about them. You don't really get to see these abilities in action very often and when they do appear, they seem tame. The start went right into what could be done with the powers, yet they're mostly ignored after. This instead takes a turn towards political intrigue and adventure as they discover a hidden secret.

For the most part Fullmetal Alchemist was well shot, I liked the fresh and classical style world that was presented. The look was very distinct that I felt tied into the original material well, or at least I imagine it was shown as so. The CGI quality was mixed here with some parts being alright and other portions being dreadful. There were hordes of these creatures at one point and they were awful.

The powers were fine, I would have liked to see those more involved and the big strong brotherly armor assistant was solid. I liked the dynamic of the core characters and the over acting was alright. It was a tad over dramatic, but that made sense here. Some of the fights looked fake as you couldn't always see there being an impactful connection for hits.

The Conclusion

Fullmetal Alchemist is alright, it has some problems yet I still enjoyed it. It was a fun narrative of joy and extreme dedication to their mission. I found it rather funny and charming as it worked across a fairly long run time. The open landscapes were best and I liked how there were some neat twists along the way.

The core group was excellent with the enemies being just creepy enough. The CGI was bad for the most part, but I did like how it was used to enhance some of the environments. It was mostly fine working through the material and I'd be up for seeing more from this potential Fullmetal Alchemist series.
