Gunpowder Milkshake Review

Gunpowder Milkshake is a Netflix Original film that is essentially trying to hit the beats of a Tarantino film while lacking the narrative structure or excitement. It’s not necessarily bad, but not particularly good either. It follows Sam (Karen Gillan) as she attempts to carry this film on her back. Seriously, she provided some great action sequences and a well set demeanor while killing since that’s what she’s good at.

A set contract goes wrong and now suddenly she is stuck with caring for a youth. It’s one of those, we’ve got the protect the innocent kid sort of setups. Anyways, she goes about killing people in a number of creative situations. She’s joined by a very intriguing set of women that are also interested in having her back since they worked with her vanished mother many years prior.

I’m not sure how to describe it, but the plot is very light in terms of content and it feels almost comical in some moments yet not necessarily in the best of ways. I did really like Gillan in this role, I’d like to see more of the character actually. That story would need to be much better though, or perhaps in a completely disconnected situation from this one as she rocks the intense John Wick esque combative role quite well. Again, carrying this entirely.

This was definitely quite stylish in terms of how the action was shot and presented. It’s gory, generally quite visceral and fairly exciting to watch during brief bits. It’s perhaps a bit too over the top but it was fun seeing Gillan attempt to survive against some really weird odds in terms of the situations she finds herself in.

Highly entertaining, that’s for sure when it came to the combat. Other than that it felt very silly. It wasn’t necessarily entertaining and almost boring to reach the next point. It was also horribly predictable right from the start of the experience as you almost could just assume the message from the advertising. I’m not sure if this is a definite watch for anyone, but if you like easy going action you’ll find this to be fine background filler.

The Conclusion

Gunpowder Milkshake is a generic action film, carried solely by Karen Gillan that tries to deal with some wild action that again comes across as rather bland. I wasn’t too blown away by this one, despite so many bad guys getting blasted.

It felt sort of stretched out, and really hard to sit through in terms of being boring during large stretches of it. I suppose it was decently shot and the combative chorography was decent. I would like to see this lead character again, but not in this particular situation. I think there’s potential, but just not in this setup.
