This is a Netflix Original animated series that continues the events of the original Masters of the Universe. It’s as though no time has passed, then lots of time passes quickly which is rather interesting. You’re once again thrust into the world of Eternia watching the struggle for power. You’ve got He-Man (Chris Wood) battling against Skeletor (Mark Hamill), but this show really isn’t about either of them. At the same time, it’s mainly about them both.

Most of the story here does focus on the side characters, particularly Teela (Sarah Michelle Gellar) that’s living life in a sorrowing way after a traumatic event takes places. It’s a rather morbid look at the group where things haven’t gone very well for any of them and it’s basically a getting the band back together sort of scenario. This is actually quite well done, and it aims to leave an emotional toll on those taking this journey.

I would have liked a more guy oriented sort of experience considering the source material, at the same time I very much appreciate the deeper experience they aimed to provide on this journey across many mystical realms. It may not be for everyone, but I certainly enjoyed the setup they did here as it brought some seriously intense twists. At the same time, I can’t help but feel more He-Man action could have been used.

The voice acting here was really great with honestly just a stellar cast of individuals taking on the many, many roles at play. I think they brought back basically every character, at least the important ones into this series. It’s definitely aiming to bring back the original style, but tonally being more on focus with today’s style. The visuals are stunning, I found the animation work to be incredible.

The locations were beautifully detailed and the characters looked great. It’s very grim in presentation and I definitely liked the art aesthetic that was chosen for this presentation. There was a good pacing of episodes here as well, bringing some mood and also honor to what was going on. Definitely has some neat twists, and it keeps you surprised the whole way through.

The Conclusion

Masters of the Universe: Revelation Season 1 of what’s really a great continuation of this classic series, not necessarily the direction I would have preferred yet an excellent one regardless. It really digs deep into just what each of the side characters can do, and the roles they play for this team. It provides a different look into the lore of Eternia, and the long going battles that have been waged.

It comes up with new ways to showcase these classic characters, and that will most certainly surprise you. It may not necessarily be something that pleases existing fans, but it’s a very well done story. I would have liked something that was more considerate of what the show could have been for the male demographic, in terms of positive messages for younger audiences and perhaps even the older one.

This could have been a really good opportunity to take a different look at the raw strength of the character and possible imagery that’s been shown to younger viewers. That being said, I did really enjoy the story and found it to be excellent. It’s also quite a visual treat with the animation quality.
