Santa Clarita Diet Season 2 Review

Santa Clarita Diet season 2 picks up right at the moment the first season abruptly ends and jumps right into things. It's great to see the show return and that they add a more conclusive story setup this time around. Not in the sense that it wraps everything up, but that it doesn't just suddenly conclude in the middle of the action like in the original season. This is great as that was my main problem there. Moving forward we get a further expansion on the core squad while moving slightly away from some of the side cast. There are some fun new additions and of course a couple surprises along the way.

It's even more hilarious and I feel the cast in general has really settled into the wild style of humor. If you had previously been really into the show, this should feel like a solid continuation of the first combining towards what feels like one long season which is great. This was an excellent expansion offering some unique new characters and some adjustments to others. The episodes work well in being smaller standalone entries while stringing together in a way that keeps the pacing solid. The flow of the episodes makes it an easy binge and it's hard to get distracted while you're watching it.

The contrast between the two core leads, witty and fun comes together in a great way once again. I do however feel that Joel (Timothy Olyphant) carries the show in general being a hilarious treat. It was also great to see Abby (Liv Hewson) continue to build on her crazy antics, but to see some further meaning behind it. Sheila (Drew Barrymore) is fierce this time while being just as wild when taking on the food she comes across. The second season is well shot and works well into the pacing. You get a great mix of constant laughs, some occasional crazy gore and all the fun you could imagine from a zombie trying to live a regular life. It really gets that whole, what would a zombie do in this situation well while being a hilarious time. They continue to be creative with the plot and just what sort of wacky tasks the group has to complete in order to keep up their secret.

The Conclusion

Santa Clarita Diet Season 2 builds upon the first season perfectly being funnier and keeping the action going the entire time. Most of the important points get covered and it furthers the general narrative while never feeling like anything is dragging. Some spots can feel somewhat predictable, but you should mostly just go with it considering the material that's being presented. It has some excellent gore when the moment is needed and it should perhaps be more shocking at times than the first time around. The cast is great, they work well together and while it has a certain type of comedy I felt they nailed mostly everything. It's a great addition and I can't wait to see where things go next as it's been a thrill throughout.
