This is a Netflix Original Series that follows a group of the United States government that have been tasked with building up the new area, “Space Force”. This is the sixth branch of the armed special forces, and they have spacemen instead of soldiers. It’s a rather interesting premise, and one that has the potential for great comedy.
That continues to be explored within this second season that is shorter, and a tad tighter on the comedic bits. Their push towards chatting about budget is probably in comparison to Netflix cutting down on the offering for this second showing. The episodes here also felt a little less interconnected despite having an overall story that ends in quite a bit of a cliff-hang situation.
This one does continue the events of the previous season while diving more into the differing individuals that make up this proud team. There’s nothing really too new in regards to additional characters, with the big shifts being from the more minimal government side of things.
Similarly the comedy is very much like the previous season, though perhaps more spread out laughs throughout. Just not too many big laugh hits if that makes sense. It’s still an enjoyable watch that’s quite easy to binge it just feels like a smaller slice since there are fewer episodes in this season and it ends almost abruptly one might say.
This season was much more grounded in terms of what it presented. No more in-depth space simulations or large scale exercises. This was certainly smaller and more intimate in style being confined to specific rooms alongside sets featured in that initial season.
Nothing intense like the outdoor simulation from last season or the intensive space portions. Mostly just folks working within the office type of environment and while fine, it certainly didn’t feel as grand which again feeds back into that whole budget cuts joke segment that was ongoing.
This is of course leaning on some dramatic elements despite being a comedy, which is fine for me. It does have a bit of heart to it which I certainly did appreciate and thought was important for what this show had to offer. Definitely a worthwhile continuation in the style, but most certainly shrunken down in what it has to offer.
Space Force Season 2 feels essentially the same as the first season, just not as grand in scale but tonally quite the same. It doubles down on the office working perspective of the situation, less about the missions outwards from the base. We get to see a deeper look into the lives of those that make up this team while they deal with what happened at the end of the previous season.
They all have struggles outside of the job, or well from the job and come together to handle those. It’s held together but good performances and fairly talented performers that do provide the odd laugh here or there but with just a bit more heart to it than one might anticipate. It’s an enjoyable viewing and I hope that potential future seasons do expand the concepts of this one further as it did feel almost painfully shortened this time around.
