The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window Season 1 Review

This is a Netflix Original Series that acts as a bit of a spoof of the whole suspense genre of movies and shows. It’s a bit strange as it’s all over the place providing some genuine laughs and at the same time some straight up bizarre segments. It’s somewhat hard to follow at times with how random it is and I was never exactly sure if it was treating things in a serious manner or just being silly.

It’s such a strange balance and I’m not sure that the execution was perfectly handled within this experience. The story follows the perspective of Anna (Kristen Bell) who is heartbroken after the death by cannibalism of her daughter, in a freak jail incident and her additional issue of not being able to handle the rain. She’s got drinking problems, pill problems and keeps trying to connect with those still in her life.

She’s got a totally random best friend, a strange house fixer and then a potential new love interest across the street. I’m going to keep things spoiler free here as the surprises are interesting to see unfold and for most maybe not something you’d guess at all. I have seen some guess it I suppose, but for myself I watched this almost out of order and it was a strange viewing for sure.

Everyone was certainly fully into whatever was going on here with performances that I say, hit the mark for what it is. The comedy does feel somewhat stilted at times coming across as awkward for the most part. It’s a sort of comedy that doesn’t just hit you until you sort of think about some of the moments that are going on.

I believe that will make it harder for the series to really connect with everyone. The latter portion was actually rather funny once stuff started rolling, but it can be somewhat hard to get through. I would compare it to something like Airplane! but minus the quick quip laughs you would expect and just the occasional hit.

It’s like a somewhat less effective take on dry humor, it’s rather hard to depict and I don’t think that benefits this show. The sets were fairly straight forward, only a couple locations and some weirdly framed elements. When it does get intense though, it certainly won’t hold back as a really crazy fight scene definitely delivered here.

The Conclusion

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window Season 1 has some elements that make it enjoyable, but for the most part it doesn’t really deliver the laughs or emotional bits. It’s just a very strange sort of series and yet at the same time something that might be interesting to see continue as it’s just such a rather oddity of an experience.

It’s hard to truly describe how it is since it’s just all over the place at times. It definitely appears to be spoof like in nature but at the same time the style of comedy doesn’t straight up hit the mark most of the time. It’s serious, but yet not at all which creates this strange mixing. I would probably view another season, at the same time it’s so strange that I’d need to see what sort of story might draw me in interest wise.
