To All the Boys I've Loved Before Review

To All the Boys I've Loved Before follows a teenage girl named Lara Jean Song Covey (Lana Condor) in the aftermath of her secret love letters being sent out to their intended recipients. While these letters were addressed to various people, they were supposed to be fantasy and written in the heat of the moment throughout her life. This is basically the key point within the film after establishing her and the family.

It explores the fallout of these various individuals receiving the letters and then responding in different ways. It heads down a fairly typical route however in setup being mostly predictable throughout. It might have been better to see some sort of competition, but instead it becomes a typical plot of romance. Some aspects were clever though and it had some fun moments. There were a few laughs to be had as well with a cast that featured decent chemistry. The lead was particularly great, really capturing that floaty confused teenager personality well.

They definitely explore all the key elements behind what would happen in this type of situation. Some parts are exaggerated for sure, but it does feel like a natural modern take on this sort of event. They aim to be deeper in terms of what's being presented, but don't really go all the way in that regard. When it comes to the look, it was mostly fine visually. I did however have a huge problem with the cuts. There were so many quick cuts during the entire film and they drove me crazy. It's a colorful picture with typical high school scenes and a fancy home life style. It might have been nice to see some of the more exotic locations used for a greater purpose as they did seem to be for a minimal effect.

The Conclusion

To All the Boys I've Loved Before is an alright film, it's fairly typical and mostly predictable. It was a fine watch with some goods moments sprinkled throughout. It just wasn't anything new, being a standard romantic movie with comedy and drama thrown in.

It did deliver some decent laughs and had its moments. The lead really did a good job here representing the desired age bracket well. The supporting group was alright, but not the focal point of the narrative. There's definitely a certain target audience for this one, but others might enjoy it as well since I didn't mind it. Those quick cuts throughout did drive me crazy however, so unnecessary.
