Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 3 Review

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is one of the happy and colorful shows I look forward to every year and with the third season I was able to easily binge it all at once. That being said, it felt like the show just flowed along without making its own mark like the previous seasons did. It was just the continuation of the series with small glimpses of events with Kimmy going to college. It was almost like the season has less of a focus on her and is expanding the roles of the core side characters more. This really doesn't work too well as she is the heart of the show and that was clearly shown with less interesting ventures by the supporting cast.

I found the best portions of this season and the most comical ones to be on the campus which wasn't a focus here. You don't really get an idea of what she does there and the reason she was there never once gets touched upon after it's only showing. Aside from the story that didn't have a direct focus this time around, it also wasn't as funny. There were some solid moments of laughter, but most of it just didn't hit the same notes as the previous seasons did. Not to say I didn't enjoy it which I certainly did, the direction just felt different and alright.

Ellie Kemper once again nails the crazy and fun Kimmy with the rest of the cast once again performing their wacky characters well. We got an expanded Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess) and Lillian (Carol Kane) with Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) dealing with an odd side story throughout.

The acting really was great and I think it really just didn't have stories that were stand-out in comparison to previous ones. There also wasn't a particular musical element that stood out here with Andromedon's latest hit being a fine hit within the universe.

The Conclusion

I definitely felt like too much time was spent on stories that weren't as interesting as what could have possibly been going on. Some of the more interesting characters were sidelined for these stories and other ones didn't get really any visibility.

I felt the best parts were when Kimmy was at college and it missed having some potentially strong dramatic moments with Xan (Dylan Gelula) as it appeared like they were setting some issues up. If not that, I was at least expecting some better laughs instead of the season just whipping by. There's still a fantastic cast here within a fun world and theme, hopefully the next adventure takes Kimmy on more interesting and fun places.
