Antlion ModMic Wireless Review

I’ve been personally using the line-up of ModMic microphones for years, and this one is definitely something different. This is a change-up from their usual wired options, as they go wireless for this release. This is all about the systems of what makes this line so great, but in a compact and untethered format. That offers freedom, and actually a great distance for which you can use them. Combine that with a solid battery life and you’re really quite good to go.

I was initially hesitant in going completely wireless for recording audio as it’s so important in the video work I do, but I can comfortably do so with this model. So the general process behind these devices is the fact that they can be used with anything. You can use them with headsets that don’t have a microphone, or really attach them to anything you’d like to. They provide a magnet system that allows easy combinations and usage.

The base portion has a really effective glue sticking substance and then you just go from there snapping the magnet in once it has been placed. Each of these microphones comes with a carry case pouch for holding and that’s filled with some extra bases as well as general instructions for usage. You get everything you would need, and it works very well in that regard.

This case is larger than usual, or at least in comparison to their other models and you get a USB receiver. This particular part of the package was rather massive, so you might have issues plugging in other USB devices around. I get why it’s so large, at the same time this could have perhaps been smaller, or well thinner I suppose.

This model provides flexible audio with two built-in mics. The first is a uni-directional cardioids capsule for noisy environments and the second is a full omni-directional capsule. It’s simple to switch between the two at any time. You get a battery life of over twelve hours on a charge which is very good. I don’t know how many recording sessions would go past that. If you do find yourself needing to keep using it past this point, you can plug it in via micro USB and continue recording.

There’s a one tap silence, easy to mute this with a light indicator. It’s easy to press the buttons, very large and visible. Three color options are present, power, charging and mute. Support wise this will work with Windows PC, Mac, Linux and Playstation 4 consoles. The end piece is puffy and the portion leading to the that part features a stiff yet bendable option for easy positioning like other models.

Now it’s time for the more technical and exact elements of what the microphone capsules provide. You get a range of ten plus meters or generally thirty-two feet. There’s a sixteen bit depth with a sample rate of 48kHz. The latency is 34ms, so that should be noted if that’s important to you though I feel this is quite good. The response range of the omidirectional is 50Hz to 20kHz whereas the Unidirectional is 100Hz to 10kHz.

The Conclusion

The Antlion ModMic Wireless is an excellent untethered option for audio recording that brings the great quality of this line-up in a brand new form. The battery life is more than expected, and it should last throughout whatever recording session you’re working on. If it’s not, just plug it in and keep on going. It sounds good, worked well for any task I had and gives you a good range from the receiver.

It’s hard to shift from wired options as many are just familiar with them, but this is a fine selection for doing so. I felt the USB receiver was a bit large, but better big than having problems. It’s clear in regards to what selection the lighting is set at setting wise and that’s appreciated. They built in some quality features here and delivered on a wireless microphone option that feels like a natural part of their line-up. It sits there calmly, doesn’t carry too much weight and does exactly what I need it to.
