HyperX Alloy FPS Gaming Keyboard Review

HyperX introduces a new gaming keyboard design in three different flavors aimed at First-Person Shooter enthusiasts. The steel frame allows the Alloy to be more compact and makes it sturdy for taking it to a tournament or LAN party. The detachable USB adds to the compact design of the keyboard. The backlit keys have the option of replacing the WASD keys with colored, textured keys adding to the functionality of the keyboard. These designs make the HyperX Alloy FPS a solid choice for a gaming keyboard.

Right out the box the Alloy feels sturdy enough to take wherever the gaming is without fear that it will take damage in transit. The included carry bag offers plenty of protection for light traveling, or as a handy dust cover for the desktop when it is not in use. The modular style of the USB is just smart design. It keeps cables from getting crimped or lets a stand-in cable suffice in a pinch. The included connection cable’s braided design is appreciated as it is not prone to splitting like plastic cables. This is beside the fact that the included braided black-and-red cables add a slick finish to the keyboard. Additionally, the keyboard has a USB for charging keeps smart devices close at hand during gaming sessions.

The customizability of the keyboard allows for a personalized loadout for any type of FPS. The option to swap out the WASD keys for colored keys with a different texture to them makes them easily recognizable at a glance, or by feel. The Alloy also has a gaming mode to protect against accidental interruptions during gaming sessions by disabling certain keyboard functions. The Alloy also has backlit keys with six preset lighting modes for an enhanced gaming experience.

The Alloy also boasts 100% anti-ghosting and full N-key rollover functionality. The Alloy was tested using the Microsoft Applied Sciences Group’s “Keyboard Ghosting Demonstration” page. While an exhaustive test was not performed, enough was tested to satisfy the claim.

The 50 million keystroke guarantee was not tested for this review. The games used for this review were futuristic and traditional shooters, along with a creative first-person game. The controls of the futuristic games were smooth in the verticality of the gameplay. The traditional shooter was solid and responsive. The creative game was a welcome break from being shot at, and offered fluid control in the sandbox world.

The different color Alloy keyboards are not merely an esthetic choice, as the different colored keyboards react differently concerning inputs. The red cherry used in this review favors quicker response for more speed focused gameplay. The brown requires more force from inputs and favors a more aggressive playstyle. The blue has a louder feedback for keystrokes and is preferable to a gamer that likes auditory feedback while playing. Players should easily find an Alloy to fit their playstyle.
