Samsung 870 Evo Review

This is the latest SATA SSD storage solution from Samsung that provides a selection of various sizes. This includes either 250GB; 500GB, 1TB, 2TB or 4tb options. I was able to review the 500GB option for context, with it actually delivering an almost full 465GB of usable space.

If you’re not familiar with drives, most of the time you don’t get the full allotted number so it was great to have it so close to the full capacity. As expected this is a 2.5” SATA scale, so it should work just as typical similar sizes do in regards to your PC setup. I personally have been using it in a number of ways to test what it can do. That includes as a game playing device for Playstation 5.

I used it as both an option to move games over from the PS4, and to play games off it. I also tried it on PC games, as well as being something for playing video content. Past that, took things further and used it for recording gameplay from Xbox Series X and then rendering off of it.

It was very effective in this regard, and kept chilled essentially the entire time through despite hours of footage usage. I even edited/rendered a five hour video off of it. In general, I was very pleased of the versatility and quality of this drive. There are of course other uses, such as being implemented as your OS option. For that, they have a migration software that assists with the move.

They also have a neat Magician software for monitoring the life of your drive which is a nice inclusion service wise. Alongside these software options, another service is a five year warranty or a TBW rate. That latter portion will differ based on the size you may end up purchasing. In general, you get read/write rates of 560/530 MB/s through SATA.

I found that to be the case, even using it in a SATA to USB option it was hitting speedy consistent rates. I was generally quite impressed with that quality, keeping the data moving fast. I should also mention that the DRAM and NAND is done in house at Samsung, just in case you’re curious about where that type of technology is developed and produced.

The Conclusion

The Samsung 870 Evo delivers a quality storage solution at high speeds for any usage you throw at it. It’s a premium option that is smooth, aesthetically pleasing and fitting into any existing space. I was very pleased with what this provided, and find it incredibly useful with my work flow.

I am confident this will be the quality option for the year when it comes to SSD solutions in this medium. It’s got the options you want, with high capacity support when it comes to actually hitting the promised number and it just keeps on running.

It’s really hard to dive into further as I feel I’ve covered almost all of the ground in regards to what this provides and how it was used. With that, I’m not sure what else it could have specifically been tested with as I’ve put it through many trials along the way and it continues to just smoothly do its job which is essential to my work flow.
