One of the struggles of the current generation of gaming seems to be the availability for limited edition consoles to be released. We saw briefly the Halo option, but since then many big tier releases have gone by without any sort of special hardware to celebrate them.
The Playstation 5 has special plates that can be attached and it looks like Xbox needed to find some sort of offering to match that type of thing since the limited edition consoles seem to be off the table for now. This is where we meet the Xbox Series X console wrap.
This particular option that I was able to look at is detailed with the Starfield aesthetic and theme that would match the controller or headset if I had one of those going on. Past that, I thought it was a good idea to throw together a review going over the quality of this wrap and to talk about just what it does provide.
It’s less of a wrap to say, and more or less a fabric outline that sits around your console. It covers the outfacing three sides and then largely leaves the back open. The back area is fastened with a velcro strap, it would have been nice to have something like a clasp or magnetic snap of sorts. Also no, I’m not saying it needed a powerful electronics damaging magnet as some seem to leap to thought process wise.
That being said, the velcro works fine for holding it steady around the console. The material of the casing is a soft, silicone print. The panels on the outside are solid and feature a microfiber outside. The edges of the case do have a bit of flap so I can see those getting bent over time but I also imagine that largely you won’t be moving this around so there shouldn’t be much wear and tear. It does seem to smudge really easily as I barely was moving it around and had marks, it could also be an impact of having the white casing aesthetic for this Starfield model.
I also wonder how animal hair will impact this, I haven’t any to try it with but it might offering a clinging surface to that sort of thing. I will comment that I am very pleased with the design of this particular Starfield offering. It has really nice smaller touches and info bits that do fit the game’s concept rather well. The case leaves the right spots open for your discs and other plug-ins.
I also don’t anticipate any sort of heating impact from what I’ve noticed, but I also can’t account for every atmospheric condition but I do imagine the designers did since they wouldn’t want to be liable. The quality is definitely better than I had anticipated, at the same time I do ponder the cost value.
It’s more sustainable than a limited edition console or so they say, but we have seen what happens long term with stuff like this as I was around during the Xbox 360 faceplate era. It certainly will be interesting to see if this catches on as they seem easy to produce and provide good cost value for Xbox so I imagine we may see these release often like with the limited edition controllers.
The Xbox Series X Console Wrap is aesthetically pleasing, particularly with the Starfield design but it does come across as rather questionable in value when you do look at the price point. I can definitely see this becoming a common sort of addition to Xbox Series X consoles though, since it does allow for you to change up the design without having to add stickers or something third party as many have been doing for awhile.
It’s easy to place around and simple to put away if you want to. I’m rather curious to see what sort of long term designs we get as something for Diablo would have been excellent. At the same time I’d rather just be blown away by a limited edition console as those are usually very pleasing. I completely get what they’re going for with this and I do wonder how well it will catch on.
We’ve seen this concept from the Xbox 360 faceplate era and with what Playstation 5 is doing, so the fabric styling isn’t novel. It was better than I expected it to be, at the same time I wasn’t blown away. Who knows though, maybe some crazy style will come in and become a must buy. At least having checked this out I know the quality level is solid.
