In celebration of the Ghostbusters 35th anniversary I was lucky to check out the latest sets from Playmobil. These sets aim to capture the essence of this well loved film franchise. The prize of this package was of course the legendary Ecto-1A set 70170.

This is of course the team’s vehicle from the second movie. It comes with the core team of Stantz; Venkman, Spengler and Zeddermore. They’re set up with sleek black suits and two ghostbusting weapon combinations. Two of them have the option of using what appear to be flame type guns that appear to emulate the goo type tool in the film whereas the other two are rocking standard proton packs.

Spengler also has a detection device as well. The figures stand at 2.95 in (7.5cm) in height and with these figures you also get a little slime blotch. They stand well by themselves, easy for display purposes if needed. The figures look like they’re from the movies while also being traditional in a Playmobil design.

The accessories area is rounded out with a special trap that can display a ghost within it, a neat yet novel type of item. You use your phone with it through an app on the IOS or Android store. At the center of this exciting package is of course the car.

This is one stunning and sleek item, a proud addition to the collection if you’re a fan of this series. It’s authentic, scaled to the Playmobil core universe and just cool. I will mention that it does take awhile to setup, spent an hour or so building it and placing the various included stickers. There are many pieces and this is not something the younger audience could compile by themselves. It does require batteries if you want the special features as it’ll light up and make noises.

These aspects were really awesome, the sound is right from the film and the lights look super cool. The wheels are of a high quality and this in general seems like a solid build that’s unlikely to face any damage. Once compiled it’ll likely stick together fine and it looks fantastic for display. I suppose you could also play with it too if you wanted. In total there are a hundred and three pieces within the box.

The Conclusion

The Playmobil Ghostbusters Ecto-1A set 70170 is a really awesome addition to your collection, its fun to play with and very authentic. The characters are neat in their black suited battle type of outfits, but that aspect isn’t necessarily classic when I think of the team. Their tools are fantastic, it wasn’t too complicated to build yet rather time consuming. I would have thought it would be more ready the moment it left the box.

That being said, I enjoyed putting it together and then getting it in action using the lights with the audio. It feels like a generally quality product that should be something that fans or the younger audience will enjoy. While I find the app aspect to be a bit of a novelty in toys, it’s a nice extra and it doesn’t feel like a core aspect of what’s required to find this package appealing. The figures look great, the vehicle is excellent and this is a really nice product here. Whether it’s for the collection in regards to be a display item; or just to play around with, this is a great option.
