This is one seriously impressive and large scale set offering. It’s a full castle, and one epic thing to play with. This is of course, The Grand Castle of Novelmore. The latter part of that title being the fantasy selection that PLAYMOBIL is targeting with this line-up.

That means there are some smaller supplementary sets that go alongside this one in case you were curious. The younger ones out there, would absolutely be delighted by what this has to offer. It’s a full scale castle experience with walls that are of a modular type.

That might sound odd, but it allows for some customization in regards to how much is setup and for potential storage assistance. Its fun to have a large scale toy like this, but at the same time storage is something to consider. It’s great that this allows some adjustments in that regard.

With this being full size, you get a fairly large interior. This includes an open section in the middle, some rooms within the keep and the ability to have the figures walk along the walls. Each area is also full of neat little hidden surprises. There are cool weapons on the top of the walls, trap doors to fall through and moveable stairs. It’s really cool to open the trap door and have a figure drop into the dungeon area below. The tower turrets are ever so cool too. One of them has rocks you can play in to fire off the side. Other turrets include the option to shoot little projectiles, and there’s even a small catapult.

Past that, they have a neat bucket system that works as a pulley. You could place a character in there, and pull them up or down. I know we got some great enjoyment out of that aspect. They definitely had fun setting this one up, so many little secrets are present throughout this mighty build. There are even spots where the walls can be knocked in. There are two of these, but I do wish they were better structured. At times, the pieces will just fall out. They’ll also get knocked over if even given a slight bump. That aspect definitely could have been handled better.

I loved the cool draw bridge in the front, and the fact that this castle had piles of doors that could be opened. It just feels so authentic, yet at the same time leans into a technical fantasy element so well. This is a lengthy build though, taking a couple hours. It certainly takes some time to compile. It’s not hard to put together, it just takes awhile since there are so many tiny intricate pieces involved. There are also a number of stickers to place, just keep that in mind if you’re using this as a gift option. In total there are three hundred and seventy four pieces present within the box.

These items range from large scale parts of the castle, to smaller little details. It has a box with little gold doubloons, various weapons and even regular castle workshop tools. Some examples there include an anvil, a forge of sorts and some scrolls. The included dog figure even has a holder for a scroll, that’s seriously cool. I do wish the dog was more detailed though, articulate yet lacking in detail. That’s particularly the case in comparison to the other figures that each look so cool. There’s such a range in designs for them, and details in what they can hold or wear. There’s even an armored horse, that’s sort of awesome.

I do however wish they would have had some female representation here, or maybe even another figure as well for more value. You’ve got this whole castle, you need figures to play with it. I get the focus on having other sets, but even just a single bad guy or bad monster would have been nice to have for some conflict scenarios. I imagine the budget of some individuals might have been spent on this, I just feel kids should get a counter point for conflict in these large scale offerings. With that, they do have a seriously awesome looking evil castle to oppose this one if you’re able to grab it. It’s such an interesting setup, I’ve seen few toys provide this grand of an experience.

The Conclusion

The Playmobil Grand Castle of Novelmore Set 70220 is one mighty option for play, being filled with small details and it provides so many neat battle opportunities. If I were still young, I would have just loved playing with this. I would have used this in all my battle scenarios, it’s just so epic. I can see the younger ones out there truly enjoying using this as a center piece for their fantasy setups.

I mean, I’m sure there’s an older audience too that collects this type of thing. I think you’ll be happy with the intricate design, and various hidden secrets that make up this build. There’s a lot going on here, it feels full and somewhat lively.

They have lots of little fun turrets to use, weapons to unleash and very decorated characters to charge into battle with. I was seriously impressed with that, finding only one or two elements to be holding this back from perfection. It’s really neat, and I haven’t see many toys like this. It’s just generally awesome to see, and it’s fairly easy to store too. This is a well crafted offering, that’s for sure.
