At the Calgary Expo 2022 there was a Charles Martinet panel at the BMO Center palomino where he went over his career. It was mostly focused on a Q&A style presentation as opposed to being fully structured so there were many oddball questions presented here.
He came out with a strong string of Mario lines and seemed to have a very welcoming presence. The main thing he wanted to get across was that it’s best to find work you love. What “makes you smile, makes others smile, brings happiness”. His favorite character ever is Mario, Super Mario #1. He tends to however be more like Luigi.
From there he went on about his favorite game, which turns out to literally be any Mario game ever made it seems like. There was an interesting question about a game he’d like to see, though he notes he lacks creativity in regards to that field. He would however love to see a Waluigi game based around cheating and stealing.
The most surprising part of being Mario for him is just “how fun it is”. While he voices the character he’s apparently not the best, Mario Sunshine was when he realized he’d never save the princess. It had something to do with a crane that made him go wahhhh!
While being the iconic character he has never been to NintendoLand, but anticipates being there for the Hollywood and then Orlando openings. The reason behind not reaching the original opening is due to the travel restrictions that were present at the time. Talking about a different character, Charles was asked about his performance in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
There he voices Paarthurnax, the only time he’s used GarageBand. Back in the day you’d do computer recordings for voice, nowadays it’s just on the phone and then sent in. For the particular role he recorded the lines, got the job two days later and then recorded it right before E3 at the time.
There were some great laughs exchanged about how they’d have to phone the writers to know how to properly say the created language within the game. Then going back to talking about Mario, he was asked about Mario Kart 9 and then Super Mario Odyssey 2 from which he obviously noted that he’s not allowed to say anything. To build on that, he was asked about having to give Chris Pratt acting lessons for the Mario movie.
His response was that he can’t say anything about the movie, which again makes sense. There was also a bit of a joke about whether or not Mario was a sociopath, he found that rather funny and is always inspired by the creativity of others. That about sums everything up, we have additional panel and other coverage from the show in our hub.
